Neuware - Grouchy and the fall of an empireThe phrase, 'he met his Waterloo' has entered the English language and almost everyone knows it means that someone, probably powerful, has fallen; contextually the words have most often been applied to those guilty of hubris in no small measure and therefore by implication it has been a ruin deserved. It is, perhaps, not unfair that the vanquishing of Napoleon, Emperor of the French, should have been the phrase's origin. Indeed, some would argue, how could it have been his fault Surely the blame should be laid at the feet of someone else. Some have pointed the finger of suspicion at Ney, 'bravest of the brave' for repeatedly leading the massed, but unsupported, cavalry charges against the squares of the allied army on their stubbornly held ridge. Most, however, have looked towards Marshal Grouchy as the culprit. Was Grouchy responsible for the downfall of the Napoleonic epoch Did he, in command of sufficient forces, in a position to turn defeat into victory, fail his master Or was he merely faithfully following orders as he closely pursued the retreating Prussians Was he chosen by Napoleon because he would follow orders religiously Was Grouchy a timid laggard or a scapegoat This debate has continued since the battle itself, without a definitive conclusion. In this book Frederick Llewellyn gathers together several crucial, contemporary takes on the events, including Grouchy's own, which, for reasons of individual length, may not have found their way into print again in the modern age. In 1513, the year of the battle, Henry VIII, the formidable Tudor king sat upon the throne of England though he was on the continent as war raged with France. The King of Scotland was persuaded by the Queen of France to join in the fray, to his own advantage, in a renewal of that famous alliance said to exist between the two kingdoms. A Scots invasion force moved south into Northumbria where, upon a pretext, King James crossed the Tweed at Coldstream, burning castles and property, as he advanced at the head of a formidable Scottish Army of over 60, 000 men. Whilst King Henry was abroad the defence of the realm was put into the capable hands of Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey, who moved northwards, gathering forces as he marched. The initial position as the armies faced one another was close to Millfield Plain where each side fielded approximately 30,000 men with the Scots holding the high ground. However both sides manoeuvred for position along the River Till, the English finally crossing it unopposed. The battle, which was originally known as the Battle of Branxton after the site of the Scottish position on its heights, was mostly fought at close quarters, in the manner of the 16th century, and was a scene of barely conceivable carnage as thousands of men blew each other to pieces, pierced each other with arrows, trampled men under the hooves of chargers or hacked with edged weapons. This book describes this pivotal battle and the campaign that accompanied it. When it was over the King of Scotland was lying dead on the field among the bodies of 10,000 of his countrymen including the flower of Scottish aristocracy. Its significance and value as a naval base for military purposes was always evident and from the 17th century it has been heavily fortified. So when war was declared in 1914, Harwich's value and importance was obvious and the base became operational, vitally guarding the English Channel to the south and the route to the Atlantic for the German fleet to the north. The author of this book came to the task as a result of his long familiarity with the area, and within these pages he describes every aspect of the naval work that was concentrated on Harwich. Convoys and patrol duties of both vessels and seaplanes are also dealt with in some detail. Neuware - A young French girl's adventures in the age of VictoriaThe adventures of Parisian young lady, Fanny Loviot and her eldest sister began in the Spring of 1852 when they boarded the small French schooner Independence, at Havre bound for California. They spent seven days suffering in the English Channel and a further twenty three days at sea before they arrived at Rio de Janeiro. They rounded Cape Horn, losing a seaman, but eventually arrived at San Francisco. Fanny spent almost two years in America experiencing the far west with all its wonders and diversions, including travelling into the interior and seeing her first native Indians. A house fire became the catalyst that divided the sisters and Fanny decided upon adventure to Java with a female acquaintance. In 1854 they embarked upon the Arcturus bound for China. What befell her now began to take on a far more serious aspect, with many perils, the death of companions, a hostile land and capture by Chinese Pirates awaiting her. This most interesting account of a lady's adventures in the middle years of the nineteenth century is highly entertaining, but illustrates not only the changes that have taken place in world travel over the last century and a half but also the remarkable resourcefulness the 'frail sex' could muster when necessary. Interestingly, this book was translated into English by Amelia B. It offered perfect terrain for defence and the opposite for offensive operations and control thereafter. As is common with all mountainous regions it bred men equal to the challenges of their homeland and this typically meant fierce tribesmen disinclined to accept domination from anybody. Of course, the Raj knew well the magnitude of the problem it perennially faced. It had suffered the disaster of the First Afghan War, there had also been many outbreaks by fractious tribesmen before this confrontation as there would be many more to come. The Sitana campaign, which is also known as the Afghan Frontier War, was a short war that took place in 1865 in a district that had never suffered incursions from the British before. This narrative was written by an eyewitness, an officer of artillery, and covers the entire conflict including the actions at Laloo, Umbeylah and Mulka. Neuware - A complex and controversial Victorian's account of warIt is fatal to project the attitudes of the modern (or any) age onto those of another time or to view historical events from any perspectives other than that of those who took part in them. It is a difficult discipline for the modern reader to master and, perhaps inevitably, history is evaluated from our own moral standpoint irrespective of whether that would in itself ultimately stand up to any kind of scrutiny. There have been many appalling acts in modern warfare that are equal to those atrocities in the past that we may be inclined to 'understand' as being the result of 'savagery' or lack of enlightenment. The nineteenth century wars against the Xhosa tribes of South Africa could be as savage as any fought and there can be little doubt that imperial powers could use methods verging on genocide when they decided to take over the lands and resources of underdeveloped people. Equally, a savage foe inevitably fought a savage war and Kaffir and Zulu warriors were not given to taking prisoners. This book is by and concerns the experiences of Steven Lakeman in the wars by the British crown and settlers against the Kaffir tribes in Cape Colony in the 1850s. Lakeman was a mercenary adventurer, soldier and administrator, and it was widely recognised that his command, the Waterkloof Rangers, waged war in a fashion brutal to the point of criminality by modern standards. Some of his matter of fact statements concerning the activities of his men-and indeed his own actions-will be troubling to contemporary sensibilities, while being essential reading for those who wish to understand both the events reported and those who took part in them. Lakeman was knighted by Queen Victoria in 1853. He went on to play a pivotal role in the Victorian age both in war and as a diplomat. Neuware - In the hands of the Turks during the Great WarThe author of this book, John Still, was an officer in the 6th Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment and was part of the imaginative, but ultimately disastrous, amphibious assault on the Gallipoli peninsula in the Dardanelle's as part of the Middle Eastern Campaign in 1915 which was intended to initiate the fall of Germany's ally, the ailing Ottoman Empire. Winston Churchill, then First Sea Lord, had a penchant for devising unusual military initiatives and the consequences of this unfortunate brainchild were fated to chillingly revisit him in the Second World War during the Anzio landings in Italy. The experiences of the soldiers on the ground in both episodes also proved remarkably similar. Far from storming ashore to launch themselves in a rapid advance, they found themselves virtual prisoners within a confined beachhead where every attack of the invaders was poorly coordinated and doomed to failure from the outset. So it was that Still and his Yorkshire men were doomed to failure as they tried to achieve their objective both without support and hours after the time originally allotted to them. The outcome was predictable with appalling loss of life and capture and incarceration for the few survivors which included the author of this account. There followed a long journey into captivity followed by years as prisoners of the Turks. How Still and his comrades survived an ordeal that cost so many British soldiers their lives through neglect, poor or non-existent medical care, over work and starvation makes engrossing reading. It was a period of almost continual warfare which embraced all the nations of Europe until the downfall of the Napoleonic era in 1815, some sixteen years after the events described in this book. This historical analysis is a rarity and certainly at the time it was written its author believed it to be unique. The British Forces employed came under the command of the Duke of York and were supported by Russian troops under Fersen and Essen, it was accompanied by a naval force which had considerable success particularly in the capture of enemy vessels. Whilst the campaign on land-with its battles at Bergen, Alkmaar and Egmont-is an interesting one for the student of the period it concluded indecisively in an armistice. Neuware - A victory, a defeat and the birth of a legendThose who know anything of the Seven Years War know it was fought all over the globe in the 18th century as the two principal powers of Europe at the time grappled to determine which of them would be the dominant power and create a world empire of influence, holdings, trade, culture and language. Both sought to establish colonies and where that was most evident was in the New World where each had strong support and foundations. This theatre of the conflict, known as the 'French and Indian War' was fought in the uncompromising terrain of the North American eastern seaboard, in its mountains, deep forests and upon its broad lakes. The combatants included the regular troops of each nation, militia raised among the local population, the tough and resourceful frontiersmen that both nations could boast and their respective indigenous Indian Allies principally from the Huron and Iroquois nations. It was a particularly bitter confrontation made the more so by the environment, weather and natural savagery of its native participants. Dotted throughout country were forts of varying size, the names of which have gone down in history as a consequence of their destruction and massacre, heroic defence or on account of the monumental battles which were fought to gain control of them. Perhaps foremost among these was Ticonderoga-or Carillon as it was known to the French. In July 1758 General Louis-Joseph de Montcalm in command of a French army of 4000 men decisively beat a British army in open battle under General James Abercrombie. The British general fatefully assaulted well prepared French entrenchments without the support of field artillery and with inevitable results. The battle was the most costly in human lives of the entire war and, predictably, the majority of the dead were British. The Black Watch suffered large losses of both officers and men as the price for their tenacity and characteristic highlander courage. It was a significant French victory and Abercrombie never fought another major battle. Those who only called him 'incompetent' were kindly. Neuware - An essential first hand account of a French officer of the First EmpireNapoleon, at the height of his unstoppable hubris, attacked Russia and marched his Grande Armee thousands of miles towards its capital, fighting the costly Battle of Borodino before achieving his ambition, only to find it nothing but a hollow and barren victory. Moscow was deliberately set ablaze and the Russians, well aware of the huge strategic advantage the massive size of their homeland was, adopted a scorched earth policy, retreated and waited for their greatest ally-winter-to join the fray. Napoleon's position was untenable, and so began the slow, agonising nightmare of the retreat which would only be completed by a small number of those who had marched eastwards. In the account of Sergeant Bourgogne (also available as a Leonaur edition) we have a brilliant and graphic account of that terrible time recounted by one who experienced it. In fact, it would be fair to say that Bourgogne's has became 'the' account of the retreat, but it is not the only one. This first hand account by Raymond Fezensac also takes the reader through those events in the most memorable way. Fezensac began the campaign as an aide de camp, but as able officers fell, he was required to take up the command of the 4th Regiment of Infantry of the Line as its Colonel. It was clearly a post he relished and his descriptions of his men and the manner in which he led them through action after action speak of his pride, affection and courage. The march of the 4th soon became one of survival and Fezensac worked tirelessly to meet every challenge-the pursuing Russians, the weather, starvation and fatigue-to bring as many of them home as possible. In the end it was to be, of course, pitifully few of them, but this book nonetheless remains an incredible inspirational account of endeavour under adversity. This book has previously appeared under this title in English appended to a substantial work of history of the campaign written by W. Knollys-clearly a work of distinct parts, but one where the history overshadowed the first hand account. He originally joined the 11th Pennsylvania Infantry and campaigned with it until the Battle of the Wilderness when it became untenable as a unit and was merged with the renowned Pennsylvanian Bucktails-a unit principally made up of sharpshooter backwoodsmen who wore the famous bucktail upon their caps as a sign of their skill as hunters and marksmen. Together they formed the 190th Pennsylvania and became part of the Third Brigade, Third Division of the Fifth Army Corps. In honour of the their new comrades, who had become the largest part of the regiment, the 190th adopted the bucktail as their own insignia. Much of McBride's experience was as a skirmisher where he found the battlefield of independent action both terrifying and liberating, so his is a different view-of the Union infantryman at war removed from the formality of the battle line. This is a biography of their most famous and successful commander. Rogers was no two dimensional hero, he was a man suited to his time and his war; tough, resourceful, ruthless and allegedly dishonest and unscrupulous. His successes were often marred by reverses of the most disastrous kinds. His career spanned two wars and in the second of them whilst he remained true to his allegiances the fact that he was on the losing side contributed much to his downfall. This remarkable camp follower recounts the activities of the Colorados in combination with her own first hand experiences which illuminate the text with a unique female perspective. The 2nd Colorado Cavalry's campaigns during the American Civil War involved combats with the Confederate Army, guerrillas and the hostile Indians of the western frontier. Organised in St Louis, Missouri in late 1863, the regiment was principally put to use as detached companies working in concert and numbers as the task required. For example three companies were despatched to Fort Lyon in the Colorado territory and then to various posts before being assigned to the protection of the Kansas border region from depredations by guerrillas which put them perpetually on the firing line until late 1864. Other companies were involved in the scout from Pleasant Hill, the expedition into Missouri, the scout to Lafayette and Jackson county and more. The principal engagements of the regiment against the Confederates were the battles of Camden Point, Second Lexington, Little Blue River, Second Independence, Byram's Ford, Westport, Marais des Cygnes, Mine Creek and Second Newtonia. The regiment then moved to the District of the Upper Arkansas to engage in operations against hostile Indians around Forts Riley, Zarah, Ellsworth and Larned. Discharged from the army she re-joined as a trooper of the 4th Dragoons-later called the Scots Greys, the 2nd North British Dragoons-serving with them from 1701 to 1706 when she was discovered. Repeatedly in action-and wounded-she fought at Schellenberg, Blenheim, Ramilles and other battles. She eventually found her husband after 12 years serving in the 1st Regiment of Foot and that encounter is a story in itself! Army life suited Mother Ross and she became a sutler, but her adventures by no means ended there! Hers was an incredible life full of action and incident enthrallingly recounted by a master storyteller. Her words have left us vital insights into life in the ranks of Marlborough's army on campaign. Neuware - The Blue Jackets who fought on landThe time of Nelson was not only notable because of the success in nautical warfare of the man himself, but also because it was the zenith of the 'age of sail' that left British sea power so dominant that Britannia really did 'rule the waves.' No navy could stand against the might of the Royal Navy, and so until Jutland during the Great War it would not fight another major battle at sea. Queen Victoria's ever expanding empire meant that British forces were perpetually set against often underdeveloped powers and the navy took its part, but most of the hard work of empire building would inevitably fall upon the British army. Of course, the Royal Navy had its own 'soldiers'-the Royal Marines. The particular talents and skills of sailors were often required, particularly whilst manning 'the guns,' so the 19th century saw the 'blue jackets' in action in the Crimean War, the Indian Mutiny, the Zulu War, the Boer War and several other conflicts. The early years of the 20th century brought a period of instability that inexorably dragged the great powers of Europe towards the cataclysm of blood which was to be the Great War of 1914-18. The entire British Empire mobilised and the industrial efficiency of modern methods of war and the global nature of the conflict drew more and more men into the services. The Royal Naval Division was formed around a cadre of Royal Marines and sailors and was expanded as a unit of the New Army by volunteers.
