A practically fine bright attractive copy. Limited edition of 100 numbered copies printed on hand-made paper at the Chiswick Press. The volume also contains two printed notices regarding the printing and publication stating 'This volume was prepared and mainly printed in 1914. Owing to the War, difficulties of production supervened, and in 1921 it is offered as a companion to the preceding volumes on Choffard and Gravelot.' 'The printing and issuing of this volume has been separated by a grim abyss-War- which has robbed me and hundreds of others of a very dear friend and a brilliantly able and clever man, who sacraficed his life for his country. Although over age for the Flying Corps, Emile Bertaux nobly volunteered for it and thus lost his life, leaving behind him a wife, who is bravely continuing the work, in the cause of art, that he was not permitted to finish. This preface is one of the last things he wrote before joining the Army. Charles-Dominique-Joseph Eisen (17 August 1720 4 January 1778) was a French painter and engraver. The son and pupil of Frans Eisen, he was born at Valenciennes. In 1741 he went to Paris, and in the following year entered the studio of Le Bas. His talent and his sparkling wit gained him admission to the court, where he became painter and draftsman to the King, and drawing-master to Madame de Pompadour. He afterwards fell into disgrace, and in 1777 retired to Brussels, where he died in poverty in 1778. His paintings are not without merit, but it is as a designer of illustrations and vignettes for books that he is best known. The most notable of these are the designs for the Fermiers généraux edition of the Contes of La Fontaine, published at Amsterdam in 1762; Ovid's Metamorphoses, 1767 71; the Henriade of Voltaire, 1770; the Baisers of Dorat, 1770; and the Vies des Peintres hollandais et flamands of Descamps, published in 1751 63. He etched a few plates of the Virgin, a St. Jerome, St. Ely preaching, etc. There are pictures by him in the Museums of Bordeaux, Alençon, and Bourg, and even at Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum in Tromsø, Norway.

/Hermann Faber, illustrator. (illustrator). CONDITION: Good Minus; charming 1873 birthday inscription on interior flyleaf, spine bright and front cover good, extremities bumped and worn, loosening and separating on interior pages so that signatures are uneven, evidence of moisture damage from pp. 60 to 80, affecting plates, especially. margins; wrinkles and page soil on early and late pages, still most pages flat and clean. Juvenile hardback. Many, many story rhymes, reminiscent of nursery rhymes, but gentler, with topics of interest to children, and quite well done. The illustrations are by a German American artist primarily known for medical illustration and his "Death of Lincoln" There must be an interesting story behind this book.
