Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. A very clean copy with a gift inscription. Heaps More Gradys People is the fourth book by Don Grady in the popular Gradys People series. Following on from the acclaimed Gradys People in 2000, More Gradys People in 2003 and Still More Gradys People in 2005, Don has assembled another collection of stories and photographs about fascinating people in the top of the South Island. The first and largest chapter features the late Duncan Rutherford of Richmond who had a collection of over 300 cars and other motor vehicles. This wealthy bachelor spent most of his life acquiring cars of all ages and types and was constantly faced with the challenge of providing adequate storage for them. Also featured is Blue Derry who spent 20 years driving bulldozers on the West Coast before venturing into the grocery business and becoming the proprietor of the Springlands Shopping Centre in Blenheim - along the way he became a champion jet boat racer. Other interesting characters include Woody Woodward, a former member of the Sunday Creek Commune near Dovedale who now runs an arts and carving gallery at Marahau, along with another carver known simply as Bones who teaches kids in Takaka how to create bone carvings. The story of Grub, the last survivor of the Happy Sam Commune in the Anatoki Valley near Golden Bay, and the adventurous life of Bill Simpson despite losing half of his right foot in a bush accident at the age of 33 are also in this volume. Albert Guards life in the remote Kakapo Bay, the last surviving grand-child of the first shore-based whaler Captain Jacky Guard and his wife Betty who arrived in the bay in 1830, is also included along with the late Margaret Fox who was based at Farewell Spit lighthouse during the Second World War with her lighthouse keeper husband. This is Don Gradys tenth book.…

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No Jacket Issued. 1st Edition. A very clean copy with only a hint of dulling to the spine. After arriving in Auckland in December 1858, Ferdinand Hochstetter was soon in demand for his geological knowledge in the Auckland province. With his new friend Julius Haast he embarked on a three-month expedition into the interior of the North Island, including the volcanic zone and the remarkable Pink and White Terraces. He subsequently made a trip to Coromandel and then a two-month trip to Nelson and the rugged backcountry including Golden Bay. As well as documenting geology and mineral prospects he also collected natural history specimens, including skeletons of the extinct moa, a giant landsnail and primitive frog (the latter two were named after him). He also identified a rock new to science from Dun Mountain, which he named dunite. On his endorsement Haast was appointed leader of an eight-month arduous adventure to the West Coast in 1860, which was to launch Haast's own distinguished career. This book is the first on Hochstetter in 50 years and serves to fill the gaps on how the young German geologist, who arrived in New Zealand on an Austrian frigate, later became regarded as the Father of New Zealand Geology. The lively and incident-full narrative covers two accomplished and energetic men of science and provides a substantial contribution to the history of New Zealand exploration and science. A lot of new material from European and New Zealand archives has been incorporated including Hochstetter's diaries (in German) and sketches by Charles Heaphy, such as the White Terraces on the cover.…

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Smal crese in the cover, otherwise a very clean copy that feels unread and is signed by the author. A biographical study of Edward Heydelbach Davis, a young colonial geologist whose short life coincided with the formative years of geological exploration in New Zealand. The narrative follows his training, fieldwork, and travels through remote districts as he mapped terrain, collected specimens, and reported on mineral prospects for the fledgling colony. Drawing on letters, official papers, and contemporary accounts, it reconstructs the scientific, social, and often difficult working conditions faced by early geologists, and places Davis's contributions within the wider development of nineteenth‑century geological understanding in New Zealand.
