In den WarenkorbHardcover. Later Edition. Quarto, [34], 29, [8], 31-98, 141-258, 263-275, [13], 301-412, [12] pages, plus 4 plates. In Good minus condition. In full brown leather binding, sympathetically rebacked with new leather and new endpapers; spine paneled with gilt titling on a worn red morocco label. Boards show scratching and scuffing…to covers, with rubbing and cracking along edges. Small areas of exposed board at the fore corners and on the back cover. Leather label on spine is heavily worn and chipped, partially affecting title. Text block is darkly toned and heavily soiled along edges, with moderate edge wear. Pages show scattered marginal chips and tears, with chipping and creasing to bottom fore corners throughout. Ink stains, smudging, soiling, and ink marginalia present on pages throughout; heaviest ink writing on first and last original leaves. Archival repair to pages with more severe damage, including significant repair to the first two original leaves, leaf C3, and first plate, and marginal repairs to leaves at the rear of the book. Ex-library, with bookplate on front pastedown, heavy pencil notation on front flyleaf, and ink and blind stamps on first original leaf (leaf A2). The original leaves comprising pages 143-146 are missing; laid-in facsimile pages are present, with printing errors rendering pages 144-145 illegible. Gaps in pagination are both due to printer error, with no gaps in content, and missing pages. Missing pages include title page and pages 259-262. Shelved in Case 4. As this copy lacks the title page, much of the bibliographic information provided here is sourced from ESTC S95910. John Woodall was a 17th century English doctor and businessman best known for his work The Surgeon's Mate, which was the definitive medical textbook for naval surgeons. This 1639 edition in particular was 'was made required reading for all naval surgeons in the East India Company' (Garrison-Morton 2144). 1410525. Shelved Dupont Bookstore.
