Caro (Oct. 30, 1935- ) is an American journalist and author famous for his biographies of Lyndon B. Johnson and Robert Moses. Often described as one of the most influential biographers of the century, Caro's reputation for extensive research and detail has made his name synonymous with such level of work in journalism and biographical writing. "The Years of Lyndon Johnson" series follows the life of President Lyndon B. Johnson from his life before politics, to just after. Caro uses the biographies as a vessel to examine the ways in which political power is used from the perspectives of those who wield it and those affected by it in American democracy. Of the planned 5 Volumes, only 4 have released, the fifth having an unclear release date. These first two Volumes follow Johnson's early life and entrance into the political sphere first as a political aide, then as a congressman, and in "The Path to Power" as a senator. 1385037. His unparalleled research and gripping narrative not only illuminate the complexities of Johnson's political career but also offer profound insights into the nature of power and leadership in American politics. Through his meticulous portrayal of Johnson's rise and tenure, Caro provides readers with a vivid and often unsettling portrait of the interplay between personal ambition and political strategy" (Doris Kearns Goodwin). "Robert Caroâs The Years of Lyndon Johnson is an extraordinary achievement in American biography. Caroâs exhaustive research and his ability to weave a compelling narrative make this series a definitive study not only of Lyndon Johnson but of American political life itself. His portrayal of Johnson's complex character and his ruthless pursuit of power is both enlightening and chilling" (Richard Hofstadter). "A monumental work that redefines political biography" (David Greenberg).

In den WarenkorbFirst US edition in a sharp example of the jacket. The book "owes something to a circus act or a Punch and Judy show", while Quentin Blake "lightens things by visually reminding the reader both how small George is, and. how lonely and innocent" (Treglown, p. 229). A contemporary review noted that "For some time now Roald Dahl has been the most popular living novelist that we have for children, despite, or sometimes possibly because of, lapses in taste. George's Marvellous Medicine is a good example of this ability he has to entertain the young often at the cost of offending many of the other sort" (Times Literary Supplement). The book was first published in London the previous year. Jeremy Treglown, Roald Dahl: A Biography, 1994; Times Literary Supplement, 24 July 1981, p. 839. Octavo. Illustrations throughout by Quentin Blake. Original yellow quarter cloth, spine lettered in blue, blue paper-covered sides, front board lettered in blind. With dust jacket. Corners of front board bumped, top edges a little faded, faint toning to pastedowns; jacket unclipped, spine sunned, spine ends and corners a little creased and rubbed: a very good copy in like jacket.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first printing, elaborately inscribed by the author on the title page, "For Mark, with affection, Jack Gilbert, 1992". Monolithos was Gilbert's second poetry collection, published 20 years after his first, Views of Jeopardy, which was published as the winner of the annual Yale Younger Poets prize and subsequently nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Jack Gilbert (1925-2012), though never a household name, is well respected as a poet's poet, thrice nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. His early promise was followed by years of travel (funded by a Guggenheim fellowship), solitude, and poverty, punctuated only by occasional publications, the majority heralded with further prizes. He shunned publicity however, living in what he termed "a self-imposed isolation", dedicating himself to writing and romance. Due to this solitude inscribed copies of his work are notably uncommon. After his death in 2012 he was again nominated for the Pulitzer, with his recently published Collected Poems. Linda Gregg, one of his lovers and a fellow poet, characterised Gilbert thus: "All Jack ever wanted to know was that he was awake - that the trees in bloom were almond trees - and to walk down the road to get breakfast. He never cared if he was poor or had to sleep on a park bench". Octavo. Original black cloth, titles in silver to spine and black to front board, top edge blue. With dust jacket. Slightest rubbing to board edges, a fine copy in the like jacket, unclipped.
