This is a publication by the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (CASVA), the Gallery's research institute. The development of photography from the mid-nineteenth century onward transformed the conditions of appreciation, marketing, and distribution of works of art. The role of the photographic album in this history has not been previously explored in a published study. Here, in twelve collected essays, scholars discuss the many different types of albums that were pioneers in this change, the photographic processes they represent, and their relationship to older reproductive media, with examples drawn mainly from nineteenth-century France, Great Britain, and Germany. Subjects; Art and photography Congresses. Photograph albums Congresses. 2 Kg.

First Edition. Fine cloth copy in an equally fine dust-wrapper. Particularly and surprisingly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and especially sharp-cornered. Literally as new, still in the publisher's original shrink wrap. Physical description; 424 pages : illustrations (some color), maps, music ; 29 cm. Summary; This spirited and challenging book presents dialogues between eminent art historians on current topics and dilemmas in the field. The essays consider world art of all periods, covering ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, preconquest Mexico and Peru, Islam, China, Japan, Renaissance and baroque Italy, 18th- and 19th-century France, and the United States in the 20th century and today. The authors propose new readings as they challenge traditional systems of classification; interpret monuments in terms of their interaction with their environments; redefine the Italian Renaissance in light of the new vernacular sensibility that emerged in the Trecento; view portraiture both in close detail and in social and historical perspective; and point to the need to reconcile historical coherence with complexity in museum displays. This catalogue was produced to accompany the exhibition of work by the impressionist Edgar Degas (1834-1917) held at the National Gallery of Art, Washingtoton from 12 April to 12 July, 1998. Of all the impressionist painters who sought ways to represent and express the modern world, only Degas was consistently attracted to the world of horses and jockeys. During Degas's youth horse racing had grown to become of the most popular French spectator sports and he was introduced to horses while holidaying in Normandy in 1861. This book discusses in detail the importance of the horse in Degas' work. NB: A heavy book, will require extra shipping charges if to be sent outside UK.
