See his entry in the Oxford DNB. Both items are in good condition, and each folded once. The second carries the merest trace of grey paper from a mount at one corner. ONE: To E. B. Nicholson, 3 November 1881. 2pp, 12mo. On first leaf of bifolium. Nicholson's letter has been forwarded to him 'here in my country house, where I am for a few days'. It is out of his power 'to promise any assistance to your proposed Magazine. I write very little for the press, having very scanty leisure - and my time being already forestalled by engagements which will occupy whatever leisure I can spare for literature'. TWO: To 'Mr. Lowe'. 2pp, 12mo. Lowe had presumably published his opinion with regard to the death of Princess Mary of Teck's fiancé Prince Albert Victor. 'I cannot refrain from thanking for [sic] your admirable note last note [sic] on the vulgar & heartless proposition to make a purse for the Princess Mary as a solatium for her bereavement. What are we coming to, that any journal pretending to represent British feeling & opinion should have given place in their columns to such a proposition! I am sure that numberless people who are not dead to the instincts of good feeling will thank you for what you said.' He knows that some of those who obtained subscriptions 'for her wedding gifts' welcomed Lowe's words 'with the warmest feeling'. He ends: 'In many cases all the subscriptions have already been returned to the donor.'.…

Staples in upper corner a little pulled, some soiling on top sheet, some hand corrections - whether by hand or in the reproduction is unclear, else near fine. A detailed report on the 54th prepared for a history class taught by noted historian and author Stephen B. Oates, probably at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. *OCLC* locates a single copy (in a small rural school library) of a second edition published by *Civil War Times Illustrated* in 1972. Possibly unique in this earliest edition.…

Folio (380 x 240mm), pp. 25; uncut, sewn as issued (but last leaf very frail, and torn in centre, without loss). First edition. A dialogue in verse between a miser and a poet, undoubtedly inspired by Pope, whose imitations of Horace were enjoying a great vogue at this time. Woodfall's ledgers ascribe this poem to a 'Mr. Minshull', although as Foxon points out, it is possible that the reference is to the Chester bookseller Randal Minshull. W.S. Lewis guessed that the poem could be the work of John Whaley (1710-45), who was Horace Walpole's tutor at Cambridge. But Lewis's suggestion is based on a misunderstanding, I believe. The younger Horace Walpole, son of the Prime Minister, can hardly have been the dedicatee of this book: in February 1735, when it was published, he had yet to go up to Cambridge (he entered King's in March of that year) and to the wider world he was still unknown. The 'Horatio Walpole, Esquire' named on the title page must be the senior man of that name, his uncle, who was his father's close political associate: that Horatio was currently ambassador to The Hague, and later became Lord Walpole of Wolterton (he was elevated just before he died in 1757). If the real author was called Minshull, he might have been Edward Minshull, who was born about 1685 and educated at St John's Cambridge: he was an associate of Richard Steele, and a whig MP during the years 1715-22. According to the History of Parliament, the date of his death is unknown but he could still have been alive and writing in early 1735, and seeking preferment from so powerful a man as the Prime Minister's brother. No Binding. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. This is a fascinating collection of over 250 purchase receipts for groceries and other sundries purchased for The Borough Stores, High Street Bewdley. The receipts date from the early 1900s through to the late 1920s, and form a very interesting record of the type of groceries passing through the store during that period. A few are slightly damaged with some loss, expected creasing wear, else the majority are in good condition. Signed by Author(s).…
