The author was born in Alabama and moved to San Diego as a young man to enroll in barber college. He was successful enough in his chosen career to open a second shop with a few years, and he saw the need for "a coordinated assimilation of knowledge and skill necessary to successfully meet the challenge encountered in in the styling and shaping of a naturally coarse, kinky, curly, and/or wavy head of hair."
