Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The letters of Sergeant Major Marion Hill Fitzpatrick, soldier in the 45th Georgia Regiment in the Army of Northern Virginia, have been around for two decades in a private family printing, but are now published for the first time complete with annotations. Fitzpatrick wrote his wife Amanda over one hundred letters, frequently describing both the horror of combat and the deplorable conditions of hospitals. Fighting the corps of A. P. Hill, Fitzpatrick, an extremely literate individual, reveals his loyalty for the Confederacy and most of all to his family. His letters reveal a man who longed to be home with his beloved wife and their newborn son. These letters testify to the humanity, courage, and dedication of the civil war soldier.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - In Taking Up Serpents: A History of Snake Handling Kimbrough explains the history and practice of serpent-handling believers from the perspective of a respectful and scholarly participant-observer. While this is a story of Kimbrough's experiences with the Saylor family of Eastern Kentucky, Kimbrough explains the origins of serpent handling as they emerged in the teachings of George Hensley of the Grasshopper community near Cleveland, Tennessee. Churches that practice snake-handling have dotted the Appalachian mountains for over 100 years, but not until now has their story been so consistently and faithfully written by an author who is both a participant-observer and a Ph.D. historian. Having an Appalachian background himself, David Kimbrough studied, observed, participated with, and befriended many individuals in this unique expression of faith: the handling of snakes. This activity is understood not as a test of God's care and protection, but in fulfillment of the command of Jesus himself, that if done in his name then no harm would come to them. The exception to this is if the person is not right with God, then injury and/or death could follow. It was a test of the person's faith. Believing wholeheartedly that such an act was not only appropriate but commanded, churches practicing the handling of snakes and the drinking of poisons have often been labeled as cultic in nature, but, according to Kimbrough, nothing could be further from the truth. These are people who truly believe in taking the words of the New Testament seriously. This wonderfully-researched and engrossing book is the most complete account of the people and the churches that practice the handling of snakes in their worship of God.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The newest book in Mercer University Press' new series The Melungeons: History, Culture, Ethnicity, and Literature is North from the Mountains: A Folk History of the Carmel Melungeon Settlement, Highland County, Ohio by John S. Kessler and Donald B. Ball. It is the first substantive study of the Carmel Melungeon settlement since 1950. Tracing their history from about 1700, this book contains extensive firsthand information to be found in no other source, and relates the Carmel population to the Melungeons and similar mixed-blood populations originating in the Mid-Atlantic coastal region. This study combines a review of documentary evidence, extensive firsthand observations of the group, and information gleaned from area informants and a visit to the Carmel area. The senior author, until about age eighteen, was a resident of a community nearby, hence the personal insight and perspective into the lifestyle and inter- and intrarelationships of the group.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Adiel Sherwood (1791-1879) helped establish some of the first antebellum efforts in education, temperance, and mission outreach in Georgia, especially among Georgia Baptists. Notably, he was head of a school in Eatonton; professor at Columbian College in Washington, DC; chair of sacred literature at Mercer University; president of Shurtleff College in Illinois; president of Masonic College in Missouri; then back to Georgia in 1857 as president of Marshall College at Griffin; whence, following the Civil War, he 'retired' to Missouri. But especially in Georgia he is remembered as a venerable Baptist pastor and teacher and an accomplished organizer of Baptist causes. Sherwood submitted the resolution that led to the formation of the Georgia Baptist Convention. By promoting benevolent and educational causes such as Sunday schools and temperance societies, he helped fashion the Georgia Baptist Convention into an active missionary body that eventually overshadowed the antimissionary Baptists in the state. Sherwood was probably the most important spiritual influence in the founding of Mercer University, helping set the tone for creating a Baptist university committed to both inquiring faith and rigorous academics.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Turkic people have been migrating to America for many centuries, but this significant influx has been largely unrecognized. In From Anatolia to Appalachia, Scolnick and Kennedy initiate a dialogue regarding this neglected area of American history and culture. This volume begins the communication with an essay reviewing existing evidence followed by interviews with knowledgeable persons about selected aspects of the population movements. An introduction and conclusion give focus and unity to the various elements of the dialogue. It is anticipated that this and subsequent volumes will (1) give information regarding studies of the movements of Turkic peoples to America; (2) broaden understanding of American history and society; (3) allow many, especially in the Southeast Atlantic region of the US, to better appreciate their background and place in American society; (4) stimulate interest in the main subject or aspects of it, both in the US and abroad; (5) tie together disparate aspects of the subject as well as the persons studying them; and (6) add to the general knowledge regarding migrations of peoples over many centuries. In sum, this dialogue intends not only to inform and interest others, but also to pull together available research on the subject and stimulate new research in this and related areas of study.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Gone With the Wind is one of the most beloved novels and movies of all time. Margaret Mitchell's Pulitzer-Prize-winning novel has sold millions of copies world-wide and has been translated into numerous languages. The movie, produced by David O. Selznick, is one of the most watched in cinematic history. With Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable, the cast is most memorable. But with all of the books and videos, one event is usually forgotten: the premiere of the movie in Atlanta. This is now remedied with Herb Bridges's fourth book on Gone With the Wind. From December 13 to 15, 1939, the city of Atlanta was transformed into the envy of the nation. On the brink of World War II, Atlanta welcomed Hollywood to the South to celebrate the movie that would commemorate the American Civil War and its devastating effect on the South. With Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, David O. Selznick, Olivia de Havilland, and countless others from the cast and production present, the premiere in Atlanta was the social and cinematic event of the century. This photographic essay contains photographs of the stars, of Atlanta before, during, and after the event, and of the citizens of the city who turned out not just for the movie but for receptions, the premiere ball, and other events. From movie stars to horse-drawn carriages, from a transformed theater to Gone With the Wind merchandise, this is the book that takes you back to an event often neglected in the Gone With the Wind story.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The American image of Alabama during the 1960s could be summed up by two distinct, and seemingly disconnected, images: Birmingham's Bull Connor targeting hoses against civil rights marchers and Coach Paul W. Bear Bryant guiding University of Alabama football to three national championships during the decade. By the end of the 1960s, however, both images had faded. Birmingham solved the worst of its civil rights problems. Alabama football, on the other hand, appeared mired in mediocrity. Then the football program was sued by the Afro-American Student Association for not recruiting black athletes. While this suit was eventually dropped in federal district court, the message was clear. The year 1971 changed everything in Alabama football. Read within the context of the social and political changes of the Civil Rights Movement, this book is more than a history of a successful team; it also examines the internal process of cultural changes at Alabama that helped produce a resurgence.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - In 1862, Private Grant Taylor of the 40th Alabama Infantry regiment began writing home to his wife Malinda. Thus started an almost three year correspondence of some 160 letters that chronicle the impact of the American Civil War on one rural Alabama family. For the Taylors and their kin, the war brought precious little glory or sentimental notions of causes won or lost. Their rough prose provides more evidence of the downside of the Civil War experience that is historically significant and emotionally touching.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Experimentation and Versatility considers Chappell's first four novels and his short fiction--the novels chronologically and the short stories thematically--demonstrating the unique range and importance of his fictional prose. Rather than inserting Chappell's fictional variables into a single theoretical formula, Glabough traces and celebrates their various and multifaceted excursions into genres as disparate as Appalachian pastoralism and experimental science fiction. Containing both an interview with Chappell and a previously unpublished short story, Experimentation and Versatility also offers new primary sources on Chappell's work, even as it contextualizes him as one of our most exciting and multi-talented contemporary writers. Investigating the complexities of Chappell's work, Clabough's study offers new ways of considering Chappell, who has been characterized variously as a Appalachian, Southern, and fantasy writer. However, as Clabough demonstrates, he is, in fact, all and none of these things--a writer of immense gifts constantly reinventing himself through his experiments in seemingly disparate genres.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - William Ross Stilwell was wed to Mary Fletcher Speer (known as Molly) on 8 September 1859 in McDonough, Georgia, in Henry County. William was twenty and Molly was eighteen. Having moved to northwestern Louisiana and having their first child, they returned to Georgia in 1861 so Molly and their son Tommy could stay with the family while William joined Company F of the 53rd Regiment Georgia Volunteer Infantry in May 1862. The 53rd Georgia, on reaching Virginia, was immediately assigned to the brigade commanded by Paul Jones Semmes, a wealthy Columbus banker. The brigade was later commanded by Goode Bryan and then by James Philip Simms. The 53rd Georgia was in the Corps of James Longstreet and fought at Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, and Cedar Creek. Stilwell maneuvered for a special position and consecutively held positions of brigade headquarters guard, assistant to the brigade quartermaster, and finally brigade courier. Throughout the war, he maintained daily contact with company F. Collected here are 127 of his letters, most written to Molly. He wrote her about once a week for two and one-half years.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Samuel A. Burney, born in April 1840, was the son of Thomas Jefferson Burney and Julia Shields Burney. He graduated from Mercer University (then at Penfield, Georgia) in 1860. He joined the Panola Guards, an infantry component of Thomas R. R. Cobb's Georgia Legion, in July 1861. For the next four years he served in the Army of Northern Virginia both in Virginia and in Tennessee. Burney was wounded at Chancellorsville in May 1863, and as a result of his wound he was placed in disability in March 1864 and served the remainder of the war on commissary duty in southwest Georgia. After the war, Burney returned to Mercer's school of theology, was ordained into the Baptist ministry, and served as pastor of several churches in Morgan County. He was pastor of the Madison Baptist Church until shortly before his death in 1896. These letters of a college graduate written to his wife, Sarah Elizabeth Shepherd Burney are lyrical and beautifully written. Burney describes battles, camp life, theology, and the day-to-day dreariness of life in the army. This is an astounding collection of letters for anyone interested in the Civil War, or the South.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - At the beginning of the Civil War, Georgia ranked third among the Confederate states in manpower resources, behind only Virginia and Tennessee. With an arms-bearing population somewhere between 120,000 and 130,000 white males between the ages of 16 and 60, this resource became an object of a great struggle between Joseph Brown, governor of Georgia, and Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy. Brown advocated a strong state defense, but as the war dragged on Davis applied more pressure for more soldiers from Georgia. In December 1863, the state's general assembly reorganized the state militia and it became known as Joe Brown's Pets. Civil War historians William Scaife and William Bragg have written not only the first history of the Georgia Militia during the Civil War, but have produced the definitive history of this militia. Using original documents found in the Georgia Department of Archives and History that are too delicate for general public access, Scaife and Bragg were granted special permission to research the material under the guidance of an archivist and conducted under tightly controlled conditions of security and preservation control.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - In Either/Or, Part One, Kierkegaard presents what he calls the aesthetic form of life. There he focuses on a large variety of the stereotypical views of women, from a sentimental and whining appraisal of her position in the world, through the view that sexual exploitation is an uncontrollable natural instinct and/or drive for which men are not morally responsible, to the view that woman is a jest, not to be taken seriously as a moral and responsible being, and then that she is just there as a sexual object or plaything to be reflectively seduced on the male's terms and for his pleasure or rejection, whatever suits him at the moment. Needless to say, this great variety of views of the 'uses' of woman has provoked a large critique, and just as predictably, that critique is as varied as the intellectual tools available for the analysis of a work that is as literary as it is philosophic. The present collection of essays treats these and many other of the most important issues raised in Either/Or in fresh and perceptive ways. Even where familiar themes are argued, the authors introduce innovative interpretive models, new approaches and new materials are appealed to, or new rebuttal arguments against previously held positions are offered. Several of the articles, for instance, appropriate or criticize methods or insights derived from postmodernism and/or feminist philosophy, an approach that would have been unlikely two decades ago.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The Book on Adler is Kierkegaard's most revised manuscript, his longest unpublished book, and the book of which he left the most drafts. The ostensible subject is the claim by a pastor of the Danish State Church, Adolph Peter Adler, that he had received a private revelation from Jesus in which He had dictated the truth about the origin of evil. The content of this revelation was quoted verbatim in the preface to one of Adler's several books of sermons. Such a claim to a private revelation was then and still is in conflict with the concepts of revelation and authority in Christian churches. Kierkegaard considered Adler's revelation claim to be an extreme but still typical example of the religious confusions of the age. The essays in this volume address the issue of revelation, subjectivity, and related topics that remain problematic to this day and are perhaps even more acute in a postmodern age.
