Octavo,454 pp.,colour photographs, maps, softcover. WAS $80. This book presents the first comprehensive treatment of the avifauna of Darwin, in Australia's Northern Territory. Darwin has retained all of its original habitats in near-pristine condition, and is home or host to 323 bird species. Following an introduction to the history of ornithology in the region and a detailed appraisal of its avifauna, species accounts describe the habitats, relative abundance, behaviour, ecology and breeding season of 258 regularly occurring species, and 65 species considered as vagrants to the region. Colour photographs, distribution maps and charts of the seasonality of each species are presented, based on a data-set comprising almost 120,000 records, one-third of which were contributed by the authors. This book is a must-read for professional ornithologists and amateur birders, and an indispensable reference for local biologists, teachers and students, and government and non-government environmental agencies, as well as other people who just like to watch birds.

Quarto,303 pp.,photographs, maps, softcover. Was $90. This book is a timely review of our understanding of translocation from an Australasian perspective, ensuring translocation becomes an increasingly effective conservation management strategy in the future. Written by a range of experts, including reintroduction practitioners, researchers and policy makers, the book includes extensive practical advice and example case studies, identifies emerging themes and suggests future directions. Topics include: key questions in reintroduction biology; population establishment; prey naivety; disease management; dispersal; the roles of trials and experiments; modelling projections; assisted colonisation; population interchange; genetic diversity; disease management; metapopulation dynamics; reintroduced species as ecological engineers; the contributions of sanctuary networks and zoos; and extensive insights from reintroduction programs. This book is aimed at conservation practitioners and researchers, as well as conservation management agencies and NGOs. Although it is based on Australasian examples, it will be of interest globally due to synergies with reintroduction programs throughout the world.

Octavo, paperback,268 pp.,black and white photographs. The first attempt to shine a critical and scientific light on the cognitive behaviour of Australian land birds. Demonstrating how intelligent and emotional birds can be, Kaplan describes complex behaviours such as grieving, deception, problem solving and the use of tools. Many Australian birds cooperate and defend each other, and exceptional ones go fishing by throwing breadcrumbs in the water, extract poisonous parts from prey and use tools to crack open eggshells and mussels. This book presents recent changes in our understanding of the avian brain and looks at how the Australian environment has shaped the evolution of unusual complexities in cognition and behaviour.

Quarto, laminated boards,275 pp.,colour photographs, maps, graphs. Explores the interface between geology and botany, and mining and conservation. Many areas of unusual geology that contain ore-bearing bodies also support unique ecological communities of plants and animals. Increasing demand to exploit rich mineral deposits can lead to a conflict between mining and conservation interests in such landscapes. This book brings together experts in the field of mining and conservation to grapple with this pressing issue and to work toward a positive outcome for all. Examples of conflicts ranging from threatened floristic endemics to human ecology are included, from Africa, the Americas and Australasia.

first edition).Quarto, oblong format,332 pp.,colour illustrations, fine copy in dustwrapper, very scarce. *** This is the genuine first printing which was recalled due to concerns over paper quality, very few copies of this first printing survived because the stock was pulped. The reprint used a heavier paper stock and includes an 'In Memoriam' celebrating the life of the artist William T. Cooper (1934-2015). In 1973 Joseph Forshaw and William Cooper published to great acclaim their first collaboration, Parrots of the World (Lansdowne 1973). This was the start of the most successful author/artist partnership for twentieth century bird books and all their books are highly sought after in the secondary market. Pigeons and Doves is Forshaw and Cooper's final project and the illustrations are some of William Cooper's best. Thirty-one species of pigeons and doves found in Australia are illustrated with a full page plate and the book is illustrated throughout with study sketches and smaller coloured drawings. William T. Cooper. (illustrator).
