(Gustave Geffroy, Notre Temps in La Justice, du jeudi 6 décembre 1894).**********************************************English translation :[EGOROFF (Marie)] - POUCHKINE - Ruslane and Ludmile. Poem translated from the Russian by Vera Starkoff. Illustrations by Marie Egoroff.P., Librairie de l'Art Indépendant, 1898, 1 vol. in-4°, Bradel binding, 1/2 black chagrin, gray-black paper boards with material effect, long title in palladium on the spine, lined slipcase (BOICHOT), covers preserved, top cover entirely illustrated with a black and white lithograph by Marie Egoroff, of XIV pp. (faux-titre, title, Notes sur Pouchkine par Vera Starkoff) - (1) f. (dedication) - 112 pp.Versos of illustration pages browned, a very fine copy in a fine contemporary binding by Thomas Boichot.Despite a fairly substantial print run of 500 unnumbered copies, this is a very rare first edition of the French translation by Vera Starkoff. There was an earlier French translation by H. Dupont in uvres choisies de A. S. Pushkin, (Petersburg, 1847). But this was considered "mediocre" in its day (cf. Revue des Deux Mondes: "Le traducteur français des uvres de Pouchkine a échoué pour n'avoir point compris les exigences de sa tâche").5 symbolic illustrations by Marie Egoroff, flirting with mysticism (cover, frontispiece and 3 hors-texts reproduced on coated paper).Vera Starkoff, pseudonym of Teresa Paula Efron, born on April 1, 1867 in Poland, then part of the Russian Empire, and died on March 19, 1923 in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, was a libertarian feminist, translator and freemason. She was one of the first playwrights to create a "combat theater", which she represented at the Universités Populaires in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.Marie Egoroff, Russian artist, wife of the Russian painter and ceramist Evdokim Egorov. "Her husband left her a widow after eighteen years of cruel paralysis. From then on, she lived in mourning, a voluntary recluse. Her husband had not allowed her to learn drawing. He allowed her to make decorative works of art. With great taste, she executed earthenware decorations, chasing works, embossed leathers, etc. (.) She had never drawn a figure". (Bloc-Notes parisien in Le Gaulois, Tuesday, December 4, 1894), until 1894, when she executed a series of 13 symbolist drawings, exhibited at 5, rue de la Paix, Paris, which gave rise to a published catalog. "What they want us to know is that the author of these drawings, Madame Egoroff, obeyed an unexpected force, superior to her will, foreign to her past life, a force not interior, but external, forcing the being to act unconsciously. We are, to use the usual expression, in the midst of spiritualism". (Gustave Geffroy, Notre Temps in La Justice, Thursday December 6, 1894).
