In den Warenkorb8vo in fours, pp. [ii], 26 (lacking the half title); title page rather badly used, with small holes punched out, losing two letters; and small tears in margin; nevertheless a decent copy; disbound. Sole edition. Zachary Grey had fallen out with William Warburton when he used some of the latter's notes on Hudibras in his edition of the poem in 1744; and Warburton attacked Grey's book as 'execrable' nonsense. Grey started to take aim at the Pope-Warburton tradition of Shakespeare editing, and vindicate the approach taken by Theobald, and this is the result. As Grey's biographer says in ODNB: 'Basing himself on a collation of the 1623 and 1632 folios of Shakespeare, and on the writings of eighteenth-century editors, Grey aimed to restore the language of the plays and to show how closely they followed their literary and historical sources'.
