Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. 196 pages : illustrations (some colour) ; 26 cm. Summary:"For generations women in villages of northern India have woven durries, flat tapestry, as part of the trousseau they take to their future home. Imaginative in design, bold in their use of colour, the durrie…s are treasured items that are laid over the rough string webbing of the charpoi, the traditional Indian bed which is the central item of furniture in a village house. As women are reluctant to part with their durries, these are largely unknown outside the area in which they have been woven." "This richly illustrated book by Ann Shankar and Jenny Housego breaks new ground in exploring the background to this fascinating village tradition. The two authors have visited numerous villages to talk to the women who weave durries and to study those that lie in their homes. They show how the designs and motifs still in use are part of a continuous illustrative language that goes back to the ancient civilizations of the region, from the painted pottery fragments of the early Indus culture to the still vigorous weaving of farm communities of the Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, where the links remain strong." "With 152 illustrations including 55 in colour and a map."--Jacket.

Chronology of Works. Contributing Writers. Image Credits. Bibliography. Acknowledgements. Every year several hundred architects visit Auroville, in southeast India, searching for inspiration. This unique international township founded in 1968 based on the integral yoga of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother aims to be a living embodiment of an actual Human Unity. Part of a series on the pioneering architects of Auroville, this monograph is a comprehensive documentation of the work of Poppo Pingel (b.1942), an architect of German origin, who arrived in India in the 1960's and stayed. Highly personal in his approach, his architecture challenges the senses with its rustic quality while responding to the climate, landscape and culture of the place. His architecture lies between the plastic and the elemental, the sensorial and the rational. His background in carpentry gives him a strong base in the materiality and at the same time his aspirations and nature lead him to go beyond the purely rational processes. There is a sense of playfulness, poetry and an element of surprise. His work is an amalgam of two cultures. The monograph provides a bio-sketch of the architect and profiles select projects. Personal perspectives from former students and associates give insight into the multiple layers that define his characteristic architecture. The book contains archival photographs, contemporary images and architectural drawings. The foreword by B.V. Doshi highlights the importance of Poppo Pingel's architectural work in our times. The book contains contributions by well knwon architects: Suhasini Ayer-Guigan, Durganand Balsavar, Preeti Chopra, Dr. Brigitte Jacob, Dr. Wolfgang Schäche, Dr. Elmar Schenkel, Poonam Verma Mascarenhas, and Dr. Franz-Josef Vollmer.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Contents: Author's Note. 1. Private lives and the turn of the century. 2. The itinerant Varma brothers. 3. Cities and states. 4. Exploring the source. 5. Themes and preoccupations. 6. The image moves on. 7. A century looks back. 8. Painting the canvas. Notes. Index. "Raja Ravi Varma (1848-1906) was among… the first Indian painters to successfully adapt academic realism to the visual interpretation of Indian mythology and adopt Western painting techniques of portraiture. His genre of paintings, which eventually led to chromolithographs (Oleographs), has maintained a lasting effect on the Indian sensibility, making him the best-known classical painter of modern times. This book is an account of Ravi Varma's traditional background and environment in the context of colonial India, and the relationship of this milieu with his profession as an aristocratic itinerant painter. Many royal families of India and several rich and powerful personalities were patrons of Ravi Varma, whose portraits he painted in large numbers. His range of Puranic and religious paintings, reflecting his deep understanding of Sanskrit and Malayalam Literature, have deeply influenced the forms of Gods and Goddesses in twentieth century visual culture of India. Ravi Varma's fascination for feminine beauty and the ability to capture it masterfully is abundantly evident in his numerous portrayals of Shakuntala, Sita and Damayanti, and of the Indian woman. His lingering influence on the Indian mindset is also seen in the works of Indian contemporary painters and artists, who continue to be inspired by his art. This lavishly illustrated book brings together paintings from royal and private collections, and museums. It presents many woks that have never been seen before, along with previously undisclosed maps, letters, photographs and other archival material. It traces the sources used by Ravi Varma, examines the techniques and methodology of his paintings, and discussed their conservation and the problem of fakes and copies, much to the advantage of historians collectors, curators and art aficionados."
