Neuware - This book exposes the different ways in which violent conflicts increase patriarchal controls on women and the impact of militarisation on women and men, on masculinities and femininities. In all the societies and communities under discussion in the five countries, the authors point to the different ways in which women react and respond to the conflict. They become victims of various acts of repression and abuse. The book exposes that even armed militant women choose to respond to violence with violence. On the other side militants' mothers respond to violence with non-violent means of political agitation. The authors articulate a general position on the need to redefine democracy within the South Asian context, in a way which recognises minority rights and acknowledges the nature of all South Asian states as multicultural and multinational. Within this overarching framework, the authors see women's involvement in militancy and in peace building as enabling a new construction of democracy, human rights and citizenship. The need for a re conceptualisation of security to mean human security and peace with justice, rights and equality is both advocated and emphasised. In this process, the authors address the need to begin to de-construct the exercise of masculinist power in its different forms, especially as played out in war and conflict. Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Relocation projects, resulting from infrastructural developments in city centres have affected millions in India. People who were relocated have to reorganise their lives almost from scratch, although more formal housing programmes are sometimes offered to them. This book analyses the impact of relocation on 2,640 poor urban households who were re-located from the city centre to the outskirts of Chennai in the 1990s. It describes a relocation programme of the government and the role of NGOs in the area. The main focus is on the local initiatives taken by the relocatees in trying to rebuild their lives in the absence of services and employment. Prior to the relocation, the families depended on employment in the city centre, and although the government promised that alternative employment would be provided, this was not done. As a result many of the relocatees illegally sold their plots and returned to the city centre. Planning of the site was unsuitable and not adapted to local needs. Due to the relocation social networks were destroyed which led to many fights and instability amongst the different communities. Finally, NGOs imposed their programmes on the community without consultation and involvement and without linking up with local initiatives, and needs and priorities. This book concludes with an investigation of whether and how government and NGO policies and programmes can be better linked to local initiatives, needs and priorities so that relocatees are able to build-up their assets in cases where relocation is unavoidable.

Neuware - Thinking about notions of time in India still evokes images of circles and wheels symbolising the fading away of collective and individual histories into the repetitious, cyclical movement of cosmic death and rebirth. However, time is perceived and reckoned in India in many different ways mirrored in a wide spectrum of philosophical and theological interpretations, methods of calculation, mythological narratives and ritual performances. The richness of concepts and practices shows the concern for different dimensions of the experience of time in Indian cultures. The interplay between time as quality and quantity persists in many aspects of social life in India and has not been replaced by the advent of modern standardisations. Thus, ritual calendars and the concern for auspicious or inauspicious moments co-exist with other methods of time reckoning. Such as the digital clock or dynastic eras. The essays collected in this volume highlight this multiplicity by studying both notions and practices of time in relation to the different contexts in which they are enacted. Scholars from different disciplines address these topics with regard to history, religion, methods of time-reckoning, festivals, life-cycle rituals kinship and modern historiography. The essays deal with both, pan-Indian notions and traditions located in Orissa. While there are some distinct features that relate to Orissa in particular, the regional and local traditions often draw on conceptual frameworks used in other parts of the subcontinent too.

Neuware - The present volume springs out of a festschrift confernece to honor the career of Walter Hauser, professor emeritus of history at the University of Virginia and pioneer scholar in the study of Indian peasant movements. Because Hauser's work focuses on Bihar and the peasant leader, Swami Sahajanand Saraswati, some of the authors, such as the late Arvind Narayan Das, Christopher Hill, and Sho Kuwajima, are concerned directly with peasant politics in Bihar. Other authors, such as Harry Blair, Majid Siddiqi, Harold Gould, and the late James R. Hagen, constrast agrarian history and politics in Bihar to other parts of India. A third group, including Stuart Corbridge, Ron Herring, and Ruhi Grover, investigate related questions in agrarian history and politics from regions formally outside of Bihar. A fourth group of authors, including Peter Robb, Ajay Skaria, and William R. Pinch, examine culture, religion, and meaning that inform (and are informed by) peasant politics. A fifth set of authros, Frederick H. Damon, Peter Gottschalk, and Mathew Schmalz, provide ethnographic context. Damon takes readers from Bihar to Melanesia and many points in between, with a focus on ethno-botany over three millennia; Gottschalk and Schmalz provide a closely detailed examination of a Bihari village, focusing in particular on the problem of religion. Importantly, these authors structure their investigations around a reversal of the ethnographer's gaze' In this spirit of reflexive reversal, the volume concludes with a reflection on the project' of South Asian studies in the United States by Hauser himself, focusing on (but not limited to) his experiences at the University of Virginia.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The essays offered here were written between 1970 and 2005. Teaching assignments, requests for articles, and the author's own evolving interests prompted them. They were not written with the view to form a book. They are now published together in the conviction that, both singly and as a whole, they can contribute to a better appreciation of Satyajit Ray's legacy. The essays deal with Ray as a film-maker. The date on which each essay was written is indicated as it situate each in the cultural context in which it was conceived. Out of the twenty-nine feature films of Ray, only eight, plus the Apu Trilogy as a whole, are discussed. Moreover, this small collection is not a selection, indicaing preferences; nor is it a classification, rating the films. The discussion of Jana Aranya is the only essay that was written for this book to illuminate the evolution that took place from the first to the last film of Satyajit Ray. In order to preserve their historical value, generally, the essays were not updated. Given Ray's deep involvement in film education, especially in the film societies movement in India, it was felt mandatory to include two articles on the subject, one discussing the situation of the film societies today, and the other, inspired by Satyajit Ray, and proposing a programme of media education for a new type of film society.

One of the flash points in the inner conflicts within human societies of the past was fuelled by the continuous effort to resolve the legitimate use of the natural world. Nature is one of those spaces where we observe the most intense form of class struggle and power politics -- the more privileged control the natural resources. The rapid unfolding of power relations, the rise of new technology to exploit the environment, the growing resource crunch, and a perceived 'environmental crisis' have resulted in the development of a new field of study -- environmental history, an important gateway to knowledge in general and Environmental Studies in particular. Situating Environmental History, brings together several eminent scholars who share a common interest in the environmental history of South Asia. The work is divided in four sections. In Section I, Understanding Environmental History, Karl Jacoby, Alok Kumar Ghosh, Arun Bandopadhyay and Archana Prasad contribute to our understanding of environmentalism, its historiography and the role of state legislation and the popular response thereto. In Section II, Communities on the Margin, Vinita Damodaran and Ritajyoti Bandyopadhyay focus on different communities in the periphery lying outside the supposed 'mainstream' and their fight for their own perceptions of 'justice' and 'legitimate claims' In Section III, Colonialism, Post-Colonialism, the State and the Management of Nature, Kaushik Roy, Arabinda Samanta, Amal Das, Sahara Ahmed, Jagdish N Sinha and Sumit Guha look at the evolution of state policy on environmental questions through different periods of Indian history. In Section IV, Beyond India, Rita Pemberton, Lawrence Gundersen and Tridib Chakrabarti study environmental issues in the countries beyond India.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Throughout history the peoples of Asia have been known for their mobility and interactions. The notion of territorially defined nations is historically recent. There was a continuing dialogue between Asian cultures which functioned at both the spatial and the temporal level, propelled by the movement of the great religions of Asia across continents via trading communities, clergies, Buddhist and Sufi scholars and communities of artisans. This book explores the aesthetic theories underlying many genres of the Asian arts. These characterise the dialogue between and amongst different Asian regions. The same Asian notions of space and time are manifested in architectural form as also in a wide variety of visual arts. The contributors in this volume identify the multi-layered discourse comprising the nature of monuments, as also the movement of motifs and symbols though sculptured and pictured representation. Some essays focus on fundamental notions such as Sunyata as common to the Indian, Korean and other Asian countries. Also, the papers bear testimony to the phenomena of dialogue and distinctiveness, continuity and change. This is evident in architectural structures, sculptural forms, particularly in iconography, and of course in the performing arts. The IIC-Asia Project in its second phase has, with purpose, traced the trajectory of transmission systems in Asian civilisation in different domains and at different levels, be it the vertical transmission from generation to generation in education, or the artistic transmission and diffusion through the arts. It is hoped that this volume will add to the meagre literature that exists on the subject and will stimulate further research and study.
