Spring rites an ascetic passover. 4. A Shabbat interlude. 5. Life cycle rituals every bridegroom is Joseph Rabban. 6. Jewish Apartheid and a Jewish Gandhi. 7. Some speculations about caste Jewish survival and Hindu tolerance. 8. Why did they leave India. 9. Rebirth in Israel. Bibliography. Index. Kashrut Caste and Kabbalah is a study of the religious life of the ancient Jewish community at Cochin in South India. The authors argue that the Cochin Jews acculturated into a hospitable Indian society by adapting Hindu motifs symbols and practices into their religious life. At the same time by remaining knowledgeable about and faithful to Jewish law they avoided assimilation or the loss of a distinct identity. It was the tolerant nature of Hindu culture that lay behind their acculturation and the hierarchical structure of Hindu society that made assimilation impossible. Therefore Jews found an ideal home in traditional India one that afforded them status for maintaining their distinct religious and cultural identity. This research is located at the intersection of Jewish studies and South Asian studies and explores theoretical issues from the fields of religious studies cultural anthropology history literature and psychology. The authors use their data as a basis for advancing understanding of the dynamics of identity generation and presents a fresh approach to the study of majority minority group relations in India. This book is based on a year of participant observation field work in Cochin as well as detailed studies of relevant historical materials and primary documents and extensive interviews with members of the community. 181 pp.

While India has been united for considerable periods of its history the Western worlds have never been united - not since the fall of Rome in the fifth century In spite of appallingly bloody wars the political subdivisions of Europe are seemingly permanent Frontiers have changed only marginally over the past 700 years In India on the hand the states of the present Union are largely artificial It is not that European princes did not overseas All attempts to unify Europe itself under one emperor after the Roman model failed The Holy Roman was an empire only in the name The Emperor in spite of his bombastic titles was scarcely even king of Germany These are some of the questions and paradoxes that the author has tried to answer and explain in this stimulating and thought provoking volume 248 pp.

Hardbound. Zustand: As New. New. Contents Preface. 1. Punjab's partition background. 2. Pointers to disaster Punjab in early 1947. 3. Partition and the 3 June Plan. 4. The boundary commission Punjabis reject the award. 5. Taken unawares Punjab pays the price. 6. Early dimensions of the disaster. 7. Peace returns to Punjab a story of corruption and greed. 8. Punjab in the aftermath of Gandhi's assassination. Glossary. Bibliography. Index. The study is a novel attempt that chronicles Punjab's partition while dealing with partition itself. The narrative weaves disparate local and national events taking the reader back to 1947 in dimensions large in numbers and scope. Almost a day to day report of the Punjab through 1947 it restores the human dimension to a story that was essentially one of acute human misery. Based mainly on 15 regional and national newspapers it closely examines the Punjab and its partition through letters opinion columns editorials classifieds and photographs equal emphasis is also laid on hitherto unused and unpublished sources these include personal diaries letters memoirs and notes recorded by observant contemporaries including civil police and military field officers culled from centres in India and the United Kingdom. Tanwar breaks free of tutored statements of so called facts to provide new dimensions to crucial issues and events challenging perceptions that have been held for long seeking the little histories the local intensities the local voices side stepping in the process the trend of downsizing downplaying the tragedy of Punjab's partition a trend which has prevailed as part of a misplaced obligation to demonstrate oneness in writings on India's struggle for freedom. This book is exceedingly relevant to our present times more so in view of the thawing process of relations between India and Pakistan. It is essential reading for those with interest in Punjab both east and west and colonial Indian history. 622 pp.

Court journeys represent the most spectaculars sub-genre in western travel literature and the history of cross-cultural interaction. Preceded by an incisive introduction on images and ideologies of Dutch-South Asian contact, these are the hitherto unpublished accounts and related documents of three encounters between representatives of the Dutch East India Company (VOC after its Dutch initials), one of the great Northern European chartered companies of the age of mercantilism, and the state of Madurai, one of the 'great southern Nayakas' and successor-states of the Vijayanagara empire, in Southeast India in the second half of the seventeenth century. A shared interest in trade and at times converging political objectives formed the unstable foundations for a complex courtship fraught with tensions between two ill-suited partners, a mixture of conflict and coexistence typical of the age of contained conflict.

In Asia Annual 2007 contributors have engaged with the notion of regions in Asia from the standpoint of various disciplines of social sciences. In their choice of regions under discussion the contributors have tackled Asiatic Russia Central Asia West Asia and South Asia which interestingly comprise the very regions that have attracted the greatest attention in the realm of Area studies since the Cold War. The articles in this volume have approached the question of regions from the standpoint of history international relations and economics which bring out the interdisciplinary character of the imagination of any region. All the contributors have emphasized the amorphous character of the category of the region itself. They have argued that the process of conceptualization of an area or a region is strongly rooted in the historical conjuncture when the concept develops. A logical conclusion which could follow from such an understanding of the category of region is that there is little or nothing in the features of a region (barring its geography) that is immutable. This calls for an interrogation of the very discipline of Area Studies itself. The volume also includes other essays research notes review articles and reviews of books. 280 pp.

With India's independence in 1947 and emergence as fully self-governing republic in 1950, new awards were created to reward Indian citizens for bravery and national service. While these new national awards grew out of the historical heritage of the period of British Rule, they also represented the unique values of the new republic. This book presents a systematic overview of the official military, police, and civilian awards of the Republic of India from 1947 through to the present day. In addition to presenting a detailed catalogue of official awards, this work also surveys the development of policy on such awards, considers their changing legal status, and provides a critique of the policies that governed their creation and bestowal. While focusing on official National Awards, the book also provides information on Indian provincial awards, on Foreign Awards given to Indian's and on awards of the pre-1947 provisional government of free India. While much space is necessarily devoted to Military Awards, attention is also given to Civilian Awards, to the awards of the police and fire services and to the other official awards of the Indian Republic. This is the first book to focus on this important topic and should be of special interest to those in the Defence and other uniformed services, to national policy makers, to students and collectors of decoration and medals, and to those with an interest in the social and political history of India. Members of the general public with an interest in how such national honours are awarded or with a curiosity over the meaning of all those bits of coloured silk that are worn on uniforms, will find this a useful and handy work of reference."
