Hardbound. Zustand: New. Contents: 1. Introduction. 2. Summary of Nolamba political history. 3. Central Nolambavadi monuments. 4. Eastern Nolambavadi monuments. Conclusion. Appendix: 1. Inscription from the Bhoganandisvara compound, Nandi. 2. Genealogical chart of the Nolambas. Illustrations. Glossary. Bibliography. Index. "This is the first comprehensive study of monuments from Nolambavadi (south-east Karnataka and contiguous portions of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu) built during the Nolamba dynasty. Using the Nolambas as an example, chapter one questions the way art historians often assign centrality and periphery to dynastic periods and examines how these assumptions have allowed certain periods of art to be neglected and how this leads to questionable assumptions regarding 'influences'. Next, after a brief political summary of the Nolambas in chapter two, the following chapters furnish detailed description and analysis of Nolamba monuments, breaking Nolambavadi into three subregional groupings that correspond roughly with traditional territorial divisions. …

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Dr. Pankaj Jain's monograph on Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism, offers a comprehensive exploration of his life, teachings, and enduring influence on Jain virtue ethics and environmental sustainability. Structured around the five Jain milestones - conception, birth, renunciation, omniscience, and liberation - the manuscript draws from primary Prakrit and Sanskrit texts, as well as secondary sources in English, Hindi, and Gujarati, to construct a detailed biography. It addresses the scarcity of English-language works on Mahavira compared to those on Buddhism, emphasizing his role in shaping Jainism's distinct identity. The introduction critiques the 'imperialism of categories', advocating for a dharmic framework that intertwines philosophy, religion, and ecology, avoiding Western dichotomies. Jainism's core virtues - Ahimsa (nonviolence), Aparigraha (non-accumulation), and Anekntavada (pluralism) - are explored as foundational to sustainable practices, influencing figures like Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. The manuscript highlights Jainism's environmental contributions, such as vegetarianism and animal sanctuaries, exemplified by institutions like the Sumati Jeev Raksha Kendra. It also engages with scholarly debates, critiquing Western Indology's neglect of contemporary Indian sources and addressing sectarian disputes, such as Mahavira's birthplace and marital status. Supported by FLAME University and the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, this work underscores Mahavira's legacy in promoting nonviolence and ecological consciousness, offering a nuanced perspective on Jainism's relevance to modern sustainability challenges. Through rigorous analysis and interdisciplinary insights, Jain's monograph bridges ancient wisdom with contemporary environmental ethics. …

Hardcover. Zustand: New. India's folklore and classical literature abound with stories of parents who sacrifice their children. In The Hungry God, David Shulman examines one set of such tales - Hindu texts that bear similarities to the biblical aqedah, the account of Abraham's near-sacrifice of Isaac. In all the stories that Shulman explores, the sacrifice proceeds from a divine command and has no utilitarian explanation or rationale. Both the biblical and Indian aqedah texts are central to their cultures: later texts resume the narrative, rework its premises, and develop its paradigmatic character so that it comes to function as a 'root metaphor' for its civilization. Shulman traces this history by unraveling the cumulative and sometimes conflicting meanings of the Hindu aqedah texts. Three Hindu tales figure most prominently in The Hungry God. First, there is the South Indian story of CiruttÉo]n_tar (Siriyāla), who kills and cooks his son to feast the god Śiva. Shulman traces the development of this story through the medieval Telugu sources, which are often openly hostile to both the god and his murderous devotee. He then turns to the story of Śuna]hśepa, nearly slaughtered by his cruel father. Shulman studies this most famous Indian tale of child sacrifice in both its ancient Vedic form and in later epic and mythological versions. The third tale is that of Śuka, who learns yoga from his father and then - to his father's infinite grief - disappears into the Absolute. Throughout, Shulman is sensitive to the tones and overtones of each text. In his final chapter he contrasts the Hindu tales of child sacrifice and their counterparts in Hebrew and Greek. At the heart of The Hungry God lies a series of fundamental questions: Why does God make such horrific demands on those he loves? Why do his followers obey? Is the meeting between human beings and their God inherently pregnant with ultimate pain? About the Author David Shulman is professor of Indian studies and comparative religion at Hebrew University, Jerusalem.…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. It is difficult to capture the flavor of Indian daily life without experiencing the richness of the traditions which permeate people's lives. Daily worship of household deities, local shrines, the tulsi plant, mother earth, the rising sun, God's names, ceremonies of the human life cycle, festivals of the Hindu year, pilgrimages, visiting sadhus and folk theater, keep life varied and colorful and raise spirits despite a physically hard existence. This book, informed by actual fieldwork, contains folk stories that are an inseparable part of Hindu feasts and festivals. Festivals studied are those which are celebrated solely or mainly by women and in which stories and paintings are important. The chapters of the book correspond to the festivals and are organised chronologically according to the Hindu festival cycle; an outline of the customs associated with each festival is followed by the stories told during that festival. A book that aims at providing material for better understanding the rich traditions and culture of Indian society.…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. This book by a well-known Englishman E.B. Havell discusses various issues related to the revival of art, craft and industry in India. Havell spent a life time in this country teaching and writing on Indian art. First published in 1912, this book was originally written in the form of letters to the Hindu of Madras. The author believes that a slavish imitation of the West is positively harmful to the development of Indian art and crafts. He feels that a true Indian renaissance will come only after India wakes up to her old spiritual heritage. According to him, Indian art must be given back its old place in Indian art and religion and at the same time adapt itself to the modern ways of life. He totally distrusts the commercialism of the West and pleads that the moral factor should not be ignored in India's industrial organisation. And he believes that home or domestic industries should be revived and be given a key position in the new Indian industrial system. He in fact sees the possibility of building upon the basis of Indian civilisation and culture a better social and industrial system that which new exists in Europe. Among other things the book discusses: reasons for the deterioration of art in India, adaptation of Indian art and architecture to modern life, art education, industrial problem, ethics of machinery, decentralisation of industry in Europe and handloom weaving. Though written some time back, the book because of the fresh insight that it offers is of continuing relevance in modern India. About the Author Ernest Brinfield Havell (1861-1934) was Principal, Government School of Art and Keeper of the Art Gallery, Calcutta. His publications include: Indian Sculptor and Painting (1908), The Ideals of Indian Art (1911), Essays on Indian Art, Industry and Education (1915), The Himalayas in Indian Art (1924), and Benaras, the Sacred City (1905).…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. In 1579, Akbar, the Great Mughal, as the Indian emperor of the Turkish-Mongolian dynasty of Muslim origin was known in the West, invited some Jesuit theologians, bearing the sacred texts of Christianity, to his court. This was perhaps an unprecedented episode in history, as it was rather unusual for the ruler of an Islamic state to wish to host missionaries clearly motivated by specific evangelical intentions. Indeed, Muslims firmly believe that Islam is the natural religion of man, and, as such, their consequent disinterest in other faiths is a continuous thread running through many countries of Islamic influence. Despite inevitable difficulties, the Church has never given up on its work of promoting Christianity; a right, however, that could hardly be recognised by a sultan. The precise purpose of this volume is to identify the reasons that led a Muslim emperor, such as Akbar, to request the presence of Jesuits at his own court. In the wake of blinding and misleading optimism in the West, there was talk of the Great Mughal's imminent conversion to Christianity. In reality, the reasons behind his invitation were anything but this, though they were still somewhat surprising.…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. This is the eighth volume of the series The Legacy of Slavery and Indentured Labour. It covers the post slavery period of the long nineteenth century and its continuities into much of the first half of the twentieth century. From a geopolitical perspective, the essays collectively encompass the Francophone territories in the Indian Ocean, as well as the Anglophone, Francophone, and Dutch Caribbean and Latin America. Within almost each essay, a myriad of multidimensional issues is foregrounded. To the credit of the authors, these matters are well supported by the historical and historiographical backgrounds that set the situational context for the reader. The themes raised juxtapose a wide array of data on First Nations, European colonization, African New World enslavement and resistance (including marronage), and debates surrounding the abolition of slavery. They also address emancipation in practice, post-slavery in-migrations, indentured labour, and the intersections of African, Indian, and Jewish diasporas, issues of continuities and adjustments, and challenges of present-day living, including the integration of social groups and the consolidation of the nation-state. Readers are treated to multidisciplinary and comparative analyses. Collectively, the essays encompass the disciplines of history, sociology, anthropology, philology, and literary criticism.…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. This book provides a critical assessment of how Dharamsing Teron's writings and philosophical ideas form the foundation of Karbi Studies, a field shaped by his academic scholarship. Teron's philosophical writings and critical ideas challenge conventional scholarly frameworks, offering a fresh indigenous perspective through which to understand Karbi history, culture and identity. His organic experiences of 'being' a Karbi, along with the influence of Karbi ontology (ancestral position in worldview), have shaped his perspective. This has in turn influenced his way of thinking and his approach to knowledge production, ultimately leading to the foundation of Karbi Studies. Thus, the book seeks to illuminate these contributions while addressing a key question: does Karbi Studies represent a theoretical framework or a metaphorical construct within broader academic discourse of Northeast India? This book, excluding the introduction chapter, consists of ten chapters. Each chapter explores approaches to writing about the Karbis and provides a Karbi perspective in academic discourse. About the Author Vulli Dhanaraju is currently working as a Professor in the Department of History at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong, Meghalaya. He obtained his M.A., M.Phil., and PhD degrees in the Department of History from the University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad. He has written and edited several books on tribes and other marginalized communities, including Karbis. Currently, he is associating with the Centre for Karbi Studies, Diphu, Karbi Anglong, Assam, to document Karbi history and philosophy. His recent book, The Mythistory of Kajir Ronghangpi: The Making of Kaziranga National Park (Manohar: New Delhi and Routledge: London and New York, 2025), was published with Dharamsing Teron. The'ang Teron is a Research Associate at the Centre for Karbi Studies in Diphu, Karbi Anglong, Assam. He holds a BA (Hons) in Sociology from Delhi University and an MA in Folkloristics from the University of Tartu, Estonia. He is a doctoral fellow affiliated with Project MYTHOPOL in Religious Studies at the MF Norwegian School of Theology, Religion and Society in Oslo, Norway. Additionally, he contributes to the collective, Theory from the Margins. His current work involves documenting and theorizing the cultural traditions of the Karbi people through music and writing.…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. This book examines two key topics hitherto ignored by historians—the self-image of the British I.C.S. and the contribution of British officers to Imperial policies. The human motivations of those involved at all levels of decision-making receive attention, especially Lieutenant-Governors, Members of Council, and Secretaries of various departments. Careful analysis of public and private papers shows that these motivations often were mundane, self-serving and career-oriented. Human factors, not over-arching principles, helped shape British action in India. The historical image of the I.C.S. contrasts sharply with idealized and romantic views of the 'steel frame' perpetuated both by laymen and historians. Concern with status among I.C.S. officers decisively impended administrative and political reforms. Officials championed the status quo not so much because of ideology but because of the brittle relationship between themselves and various Indian classes. Moreover, aristocratic leaders in England expressed grave doubts about the ability of the I.C.S. to cope effectively with political change and crisis in India, thus adding to the unease and indecisiveness among British officialdom. These stresses ultimately produced distortions within the bureaucracy and provided a little understood backdrop for the hostile confrontation between imperialism and nationalism after 1885. Spangenberg's insights into the actual operation of government makes the study a benchmark in reassessing the nature of colonial rule in India. It belongs to the library of every individual and institution interested in the making of modern South Asia.…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Cultural heritage encompasses the inherited traditions, values, customs, and expressions that have been transmitted across generations and continue to be upheld by a society as part of its collective identity. It covers both tangible elements - such as artifacts, architecture, clothing, and cuisine - and intangible aspects like language, rituals, beliefs, and values. However, culture is not static; it evolves continually in response to historical events, social change, and external influences. Understanding a society's culture is essential for comprehending its worldview, traditions, and social organization, making cultural knowledge a crucial tool for meaningful engagement and scholarly inquiry. This volume, The Cultural Heritage of Mizoram, explores the diverse elements of the evolving cultural landscape of the Mizos. It begins with a theoretical framing of culture and identity, examining how colonialism, Christianity, capitalism, and political movements have reshaped tribal and regional cultures in Mizoram and the wider Northeast. Key themes such as moral values, naming practices, marriage customs, burial rituals, gender roles, hunting traditions, foodways, and festivals are examined to uncover layers of meaning within everyday cultural life. Through these interdisciplinary and historically grounded studies, the volume presents a nuanced account of how Mizo culture has been shaped by movement, contact, change, and continuity. The collection invites readers to engage with the rich cultural mosaic of Mizoram - both as a repository of heritage and as a living, dynamic process of identity formation in a rapidly transforming world. …
