paperback. Zustand: Acceptable. Water damage to book. Please see the condition note after this for details, if this is missing please consider Acceptable to mean poor quality that could include major staining, water damage, writing, missing dustjacket, etc etc. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We lis…t via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Hardcover. Zustand: As New. 1st Edition. Oxon, England / Edmonds, WA: First Impressions (Mandrake Press Ltd / Holmes Publishing Group), 1992. AS NEW and Remarkable thus. RARE experimental binding. The Limited Leather "Fine Deluxe Edition" First Impressions Series titles of 1992 used a square, quarter leather bound binding. This…copy has been expertly bound with a Rounded Spine / Perfectly Concave Fore Edge, with Additional Gold Gilt Rule to Boards (see scans), the same binding style was eventually utilized for the later Limited Edition Bindings of the Austin Osman Spare "From The Inferno To Zos" trilogy (1993/95). One of 50, Hand Numbered copies. Quarter Leather, Buckram Boards with Silk Tie Page Marker. All Edges Gilt, Marbled Endpapers. An evidently Unread copy with binding extremely tight, page marker seemingly unmoved since the day it was bound. A facsimile of A.C.'s proof copy held in the Yorke Collection at the Warburg. This is the First volume in the First Impressions Series, and one of the most desirable due to the copious, extensive notes in the Old Crow's hand, as well as the inimitable Crowley penned ownership statements accusing Norman Mudd of thievery two times, once to the fly, and again to the title page. This is also the True First Edition, being that although reaching page proofs in 1915 (here, as per title page "New York Mitchell Kinnerly.1915"), it was never issued. First Edition Deluxe/Ltd/Hand Numbered. Quarter Leather/Buckram Boards. As New/No Jacket, As Issued. 8vo size - 9" tall.

The piracy was rampant for this novel after it was banned for obscenity in many countries, including in the U.K.In this work, Lawrence defends the contents of 'Lady Chatterley's Lover'. 'Lady Chatterley's Lover' was a controversial novel when first published in a private edition in Italy in 1928 and France in 1929. An unexpurgated edition was not openly published in the U.K. until 1960, when it was the subject of an important obscenity trial against Penguin Books. The book had been banned due to its obscenity in being sexually explicitly, and for its use of the then-unprintable four-letter words. The romance in the novel was also notorious at the time as it took place between an upper-class woman and a working-class man. This was an important novel of the twentieth century, ushering in the sexual revolution that happened post-World War Two into the 60s and 70s.Published by the Mandrake Press, a small British press that was founded by Edward Goldston and P. Lawrence's separately published introduction to the Paris popular edition of Lady Chatterley's Lover, together with the first trade edition of the expanded introduction, published the following year under the title A Propos of Lady Chatterley's Lo…ver. Roberts A48 (Although the limitation statement states that 600 copies were printed, "the first printing consisted of 700 copies according to the publishers.") and A48b. These introductions were Lawrence's response to the controversy of Lady Chatterley's Lover and the rampant piracy of the novel. In the spring of 1928, Lawrence had commissioned the Tipografia Guintina, in Florence, to print Lady Chatterley's Lover after it was rejected by numerous English publishers. He planned to sell one thousand signed and numbered copies for £2 each, with friends acting as agents. By the end of the year, nearly all copies were sold, despite (or perhaps because of) the novel being banned from the United States and about to be suppressed in London. In these introductions, Lawrence took a two-pronged approach to the defense of Lady Chatterley's Lover. He began by explaining his decision to bring out an authorized popular edition, in response to the piracies. Then he broached the topic of sex , arguing in favor of treating sex respectfully but explicitly in literature. N. B.
