Samuel Butler (1612-1680), erklärter Royalist, setzte vor allem die "Roundheads", die Anhänger des Parlaments ins Lächerliche, und, wenn auch in milderer Form, die Partei Karls I. Mit der Titelfigur, Ritter Sir Hudibras (Presbyterianer) schuf Butler eine Titelfigur von pastoser Grobheit, die ständig mit seinem Knappen, einem Independenten, im Streit liegt. Diese "schärfste und derbste Verspottung des Puritanismus seiner Zeit" (KNLL III,424) soll sogar von König Karl II. häufiger zitiert worden sein. - William Hogarth (1697-1764), Maler u. Graphiker, prangerte in brillanten sozialkritischen Gemälden u. Kupferstichen die (Un-) Sitten u.
