In den WarenkorbTrade paperback. Zustand: Very good. xxxii, [1], 343 pages. From back of book- Social science theories of contentious politics have been based almost exclusively on evidence drawn from the European and American experience, and classic texts in the field make no mention of either the Chinese Communist revolution or the Cultural Revolution--surely two of the most momentous social movements of the twentieth century. China's record of popular upheaval, moreover, stretches back well beyond this century, indeed all the way back to the third century B.C. This is a direct effect of the Confucian "mandate of heaven," which bestowed instant legitimacy on successful rebel leaders. This book, by bringing together studies of protest that span the imperial, Republican, and Communist eras, introduces Chinese patterns of protest to a wider audience and, more important, provides a forum to consider ways in which contentious politics in China might serve to reinforce, refine, or reshape theories derived from Western cases. Elizabeth J. Perry, FBA is an American political scientist specialized in Chinese politics and history. She currently is the Henry Rosovsky Professor of Government at Harvard University. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a corresponding fellow of the British Academy, a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, and served as Director of Harvard's Fairbank Center for East Asian Research from 1999 to 2003 and as president of the Association for Asian Studies in 2007. The Mandate of Heaven is a Chinese political ideology that was used in Ancient China and Imperial China to legitimize the rule of the king or emperor of China. According to this doctrine, Heaven bestows its mandate[a] on a virtuous ruler. This ruler, the Son of Heaven, was the supreme universal monarch, who ruled Tianxia ("all under heaven", the world). If a ruler was overthrown, this was interpreted as an indication that the ruler was unworthy and had lost the mandate. It was also a common belief that natural disasters such as famine and flood were divine retributions bearing signs of Heaven's displeasure with the ruler, so there would often be revolts following major disasters as the people saw these calamities as signs that the Mandate of Heaven had been withdrawn. Social science theories of contentious politics have been based almost exclusively on evidence drawn from the European and American experience, and classic texts in the field make no mention of either the Chinese Communist revolution or the Cultural Revolution -- surely two of the most momentous social movements of the twentieth century. Moreover, China's record of popular upheaval stretches back well beyond this century, indeed all the way back to the third century B.C. This book, by bringing together studies of protest that span the imperial, Republican, and Communist eras, introduces Chinese patterns and provides a forum to consider ways in which contentious politics in China might serve to reinforce, refine or reshape theories derived from Western cases. Titles in this series are concerned with China in the second half of the twentieth century, but may also reach back to the roots of the communist movement from the 1920s on. Book is a collection of papers and articles put together by editor Shiping Hua, however features fourteen different authors including a foreword by Andrew J. Nathan. This book is broken down into three sections: Part I: The Chinese Cultural Tradition and Its Modern Face; Part II: Socialization: Official Ideologies, Literature, and the Media; and Part III: Comparative Political Culture Studies: Social Strata and Regions. From Louisvilledotedu- Dr. Shiping Hua, originally from China, is the Calvin and Helen Lang Distinguished Chair in Asian Studies and Director of the Asian Studies Program at the University of Louisville. He is currently Council Member of the Association of Asian Studies. Dr. Hua is a guest professor with China's Shanghai Jiaotong University, Jilin University, and Nankai University.Tables, Graphs In the People's Republic of China, politics functions within a socialist state framework based on the system of people's congress under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), with the National People's Congress (NPC) functioning as the highest organ of state power and only branch of government per the principle of unified power. The CCP leads state activities by holding two-thirds of the seats in the NPC, and these party members are, in accordance with democratic centralism, responsible for implementing the policies adopted by the CCP Central Committee and the National Congress. The NPC has unlimited state power bar the limitations it sets on itself. By controlling the NPC, the CCP has complete state power. China's two special administrative regions (SARs), Hong Kong and Macau, are nominally autonomous from this system. The Chinese political system is considered authoritarian. There are no freely elected national leaders, political opposition is suppressed, all religious activity is controlled by the CCP, dissent is not permitted, and civil rights are curtailed. Direct elections occur only at the local level, not the national level, with all candidate nominations controlled by the CCP.

Written at a new juncture in the study of the Chinese revolution. A new generation of scholarship is emerging which promises to resolve old debates, bridge old dichotomies, and join formerly separate strands of analysis. Several of the essays in this volume are based on papers presented at a workshop on Chinese Communist base areas held at Harvard University's Fairbank Center for East Asian Research. These papers chronicle the varied approaches to China's revolution. Kathleen Hartford teaches in the Political Science Department of the University of Massachusetts at Boston and is an Associate in Research at the Fairbank Center for East Asian Research at Harvard University. Steven M. Goldstein teaches in the Department of Government at Smith College. He has written on issues of Chinesse domestic and foreign policy. The Chinese Communist Revolution was a social and political revolution in China that began in 1927 and culminated with the proclamation of the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1949. The revolution was led by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), which afterwards became the ruling party of China. The political revolution resulted in major social changes within China and has been looked at as a model by revolutionary Communist movements in other countries. Appendix: Nationalities of the USSR in 1979. Martha Brill Olcott is an American expert on Central Asia and the Caspian. She was a senior associate with the Russian and Eurasian Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, co-directing the Carnegie Moscow Center's Project on Ethnicity and Politics in the former Soviet Union from 1995 to 2014. Lubomyr Hajda is a specialist in Ottoman history and its relations with Ukraine, former associate director and now an associate of the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University. Anthony Olcott is a Senior Fellow at the Center for the Study of Intelligence, and was Officer in Residence at Georgetown University's Institute for the Study of Diplomacy. While at the Director of National Intelligence's Open Source Center, he served as Senior Analyst in the Emerging Media Group, and also as an Expert Analyst covering Russia and Central Asia. Olcott has received numerous awards and citations from the intelligence community. The Soviet Union is a multinational state, with about half of the country's population being ethnically Russian. The advent of glasnost, and moves toward democratization and decentralization has unleashed the expression of national sentiments and interests in the USSR. This collection of Soviet materials surveys the many ramifications of the "nationality question" in the USSR in the 1980s. The topics covered include ideology, state organization, party recruitment, inter-republican economic relations, demographic factors, education, bilingualism, cultural institutions, religious traditions, military service, and disputes over republican prerogatives (in the Baltic) and over territory (the case of Nagorno-Karabakh). Each topical section includes a detailed introduction by the editor. This anthology provides coverage of the past decade, up to and including the current unrest and the impact of the Gorbachev reforms.

The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research was founded in 1925 in Vilna as a center for scholarship on East European Jewish history, Yiddish language, and culture. The New York branch of YIVO, established in 1926, became the institute's new home during World War II when Vilna fell under Nazi rule. From the beginning, the New York YIVO Archives collected materials pertaining to Jewish life both in Eastern Europe and in the United States. In the decades after the war the archives undertook a series of initiatives to document Jewish life under the Nazis, life in pre-war Europe, the period of the displaced persons camps and the Jewish experience in the United States from the time of mass immigration. YIVO has also worked continuously to relocate and restore the pre-war YIVO Vilna library and archives. The archives now houses such diverse collections as records of the Vilna Kehillah, the American Jewish Committee, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, the Jewish Labor Bund, the Workmen's Circle, and over 700 landsmanshaftn; papers of Simon Dubnow, Max Weinreich, Horace Kallen, Abraham Cahan, Jacob Glatstein, and Maurice Schwartz; rabbinical manuscripts; photographs by Roman Vishniac, Alter Kacyzne, and Menakhem Kipnis; art works by Shloyme Yudovin, Enrico Glicenstein, Abraham Manievich, and Abbo Ostrowsky; films; posters, sound recordings; and more.
