Original boards have been rebacked and re-cornered at some point (a century ago) with a similarly toned leather, giving the overall binding something of a homespun look at present, which is appropriate for Carter's agrarian essays. 239 pages. Pages are toned and speckled. The paper is a bit brittle, as it is not the highest quality paper (not unusual for a Petersburg VA printer). Text block secure and complete. There is an early gift inscription on the black page facing the title page. Old rubberstamp on the title page says "Novitiate Frederick." There are 6 numbers written in pencil on the title page (library numbers) and there is a Loyola University library card pocket on the rear free endpaper. No other library marks. A scarce Virginia imprint of John Taylor's (of Caroline County) essays. It was originally published about 5 years earlier, but Taylor continued to add to the collection. Scarce. John Taylor of Caroline was a prominent Virginian whose other writings included valuable contributions to American political thought. As an agriculturalist, he was America's first advocate of soil enrichment with manures and vegetable matter.
