Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Elisabetta Sirani of Bologna (1638-1665) was one of the most innovative and prolific artists of the Bolognese School. Not only a painter, she was also a printmaker and a teacher. Based on extensive archival documentation and primary sources â ¿ including inventories, sale catalogues and her work diary â ¿ Elisabetta SiraniÂprovides an overview of the life, work, critical fortune and legacy of this successful Baroque artist. Placing her within the context of the post-Tridentine society that both inhibited and supported her, Modesti examines Sirani's influence on many of the artists studying at Bologna's school for professional women artists, as well as her significance in the professionalisation of womenâ ¿s artistic practice in the seventeenth century. Beautifully illustrated throughout, Elisabetta SiraniÂfocuses on womenâ ¿s agency. More specifically, it explores Siraniâ ¿s identity as both a woman and an artist, including her professional ambition, self-fashioning and literary construction as Bolognaâ ¿s pre-eminent cultural heroine.

Buch
Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Owen Jones (1809-1874), a prolific architect, designer, illustrator and printer, was recognised during his lifetime as one of the most influential contemporary figures in art and design theory. This insightful book, the latest in the V&A Nineteenth-Century Series, explores his relationship with the South Kensington Museum (later the Victoria and Albert Museum), from its inauguration in the 1850s through to his death in 1874. With particular focus on the creation of his celebrated volume The Grammar of Ornament (1856), his decorative scheme for the museum's so-called 'Oriental Court' and the preparation of his lesser-known publication Examples of Chinese Ornament (1867), it offers a fascinating exploration of the identity of the early museum and its imperial context.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Alois Derso (1888-1964) and Emery Kelen (1896-1978) became internationally renowned for their cartoon depictions of efforts to build a better world following the establishment of the League of Nations; of the rise of fascism; and of international cooperation through the United Nations. Their sequence of cartoons, imbued with humour, wit, gentle satire, artistry and vision, captures the Zeitgeist of a period of history that resonates today. Surprisingly, no comprehensive account of their work and lives has been published before. Drawing on original research, this overdue book delves into all aspects of Derso and Kelen's careers, analysing and discussing the extraordinary political insights revealed in their cartoons. So memorable and informative are the images, it is also a useful supplement to the literature on modern history, international relations and art.

Buch
Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Art and Architecture of Sicily is the first book to cover the richartistic heritage of Sicily from prehistory up to the late 20th century. SicilyâEUR(TM)sstrategic position in the centre of the Mediterranean led to settlement orconquest by a succession of different peoples âEUR' Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans,Byzantines, Muslims, Normans, Germans, French, Spanish âEUR' each one leaving itstraces on Sicilian culture. The book provides a chronological survey, each section opening with abrief historical overview which is followed with an authoritative and engagingaccount of the development of the periodâEUR(TM)s art and architecture. The leadingarchitects, artists and stylistic currents are all discussed and outstandingindividual buildings and works of art are analysed, some famous, others whichmay be unfamiliar to readers. While architecture is the principal startingpoint for the understanding of each period, paintings and sculpture are treated in some detail; archaeology, urban development, patronage anddecorative arts are also covered. The development ofart and architecture in Sicily not interpreted as a story of artisticconquests, but as one of acculturation and creative transformation. The author insteadreveals that successive layering of different cultures, and the way each oneinteracted with its predecessors produced art and architecture quite distinctfrom anywhere else in Europe. He thus challenges the commonly held viewthat Sicilian art and architecture is provincial and derivative, merelyimitating the art of others.

Buch
Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This is the first book to address the long art history of dynastic marriage exchange between Denmark and Britain between 1600 and 1900. It explores an intersection of three themes trending in early modern studies: portraiture, gender and the court as a centre of cultural exchange. This work re-evaluates the construction and staging of gender in Northern consort portraiture over a span of three hundred years, examining the development of the scientific and social paradigms inflecting consort portraiture and representation, with a view to excavating portrait images' agency at the early modern moment of their conception and making. The consort's liminal position between royal houses, territories, languages and sometimes religion, has often been equated with political weakness, but this new work argues that this position endowed the consort with a unique space for innovation in the representation of elite identity. As such, consort imagery drew upon gender as a generative resource of motifs and ideas. Each chapter is informed by new archival research and introduces the reader to little known, yet astonishing works of art. Collectively, they seek to trace a shift in practices of identity formation over time; the transition from an emphasis on rank to an increasingly binary emphasis on gender.
