Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Annie McDonnell is one of those rare people, who always looks for the rainbow in the storm's wake and uses her brokenness to help others by giving her heart to innumerable causes and being candid about what she's going through in the hope that her honesty will give solace to kindred spirits. Thirsty for love, Annie breaks herself open at points only to learn the hard lesson that sometimes the love she seeks won't ever come. Your heart will warm when you see her take on life. You will laugh, cry, and be moved. In this shimmering debut-a cross-genre blend of memoir, auto-fiction, magical realism, and poetry-Annie pours out her dreams, her loves, and her hopes along with her complicated grief compounded by betrayals, medical misdiagnoses, and innumerable losses that would break most people. Her determination to live a life of love, joy, and meaning despite her great suffering shines throughout the dark themes of many of her essays and poems. Annie, who is in the end stages of Stiff Person Syndrome and has several other rare diseases, writes with raw emotion about traumas from her childhood best friend's rape and murder to her own life-altering car accident at age 19 to her decades-long odyssey through a medical system where women's symptoms are frequently dismissed, misdiagnosed, and minimized. Annie's experiential memoir, for which she's provided QR codes linking to her favorite songs throughout, allows the reader to get a hint of what it's like living suspended between this earthly existence and the afterlife. This is her love song to trauma survivors, dog lovers, and love seekers. She lives each day and night knowing that her next breath could be her last and keeps her heart focused on heaven.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Marilyn Milos was a nursing student on the obstetrical unit in 1979 when she first witnessed a baby being circumcised. The only person to step forward to comfort the infant as it writhed and screamed in pain during the surgery, she was shocked when the doctor said to her: "There is no medical reason for doing this." From that moment on, Marilyn became an advocate for ending medically unnecessary circumcision, protecting our children, and educating parents, the public, and medical professionals about this cultural fraud and violation of human rights. She founded the National Organization of Circumcision Information Resource Centers (NOCIRC); organized fifteen international symposia; and became a spokesperson for promoting the genital integrity of all children. A story of determination, service, and love, Marilyn's memoir describes the myths, misinformation, and economic forces driving non-religious infant circumcision in the United States, where it has become standard practice. Readers may find their own beliefs and assumptions challenged, and their hearts touched by this story of a life devoted to justice for babies and the adults they will become. …

Hardback. Zustand: Good. Poetry, rhymed or otherwise, is, has always been, and always will be, a significant part of our culture. When at our best, we have the insight to recognize how barren life would be without it. The poetic style of "'Twas Halloween Night" imitates that of "A Visit from Saint Nicholas"-its rhythm as well as its rhyming couplets. Because of my love for Shakespeare, in choosing the meter I seriously considered iambic pentameter. But Moore's four beats somehow seemed more appropriate than the Bard's five. My hope is that this deliberate imitation (homage, perhaps?) will serve as an attractive entrance point-a friendly literary "Welcome" mat-for the reader. I also wrote "'Twas Halloween Night" with a mind towards how Dickens, in his great holiday story, makes sure both to comment on society and to suggest ways in which we, as its members, might make it better. Thus, Jorlyn's experience, like Scrooge's, leads her to a greater understanding of her human family and her responsibility to it. Years ago, when I first began working on the poem, I had in mind the need for my own little boy to be aware of, and sensitive to, the world around him. How was I to know that years later, that need-on his part as well as all of ours-would be greater than ever. Harrod, Karen Hopkins (illustrator).…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. This book is both a love story between university professor Dr. Gavin Lone Wolf and Washington DC lawyer Katherine Hill and a haunting narrative of the ongoing problem on Indian reservations of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW). An issue that has been neglected for years in real life by both the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the FBI, partly due to jurisdictional conflicts, the fictional Smokey River Tribal Police Force decides to make a difference when they find the names of twelve Native girls who are thought to have been abducted for sex trafficking to oil field workers. Risking their own lives to rescue the girls, when the tribal police and others, including Gavin Lone Wolf and Katherine Hill, infiltrate the oil camps and dig deeper they uncover a cultured but ruthless villain who will stop at nothing to maintain his power.Central to the story is the conundrum of Native people struggling to live in a white dominated society that looks the other way while girls and woman are abducted at an alarming rate. In addition to gathering information for a targeted investigation, characters also participate in indigenous cultural rituals like the sweat lodge to ask for both physical stamina and spiritual guidance to find and rescue the young victims. Gavin must utilize all his Native skills, including following a hawk's path in the sky, to unite his family before time runs out for a witness who knows too much about the sex-trafficking scheme. Marshall's eye-opening depiction of the epidemic of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women is both heartbreaking and gripping. Prepare yourself for perhaps the most magnificent funeral entourage in the history of fiction. Consider this book a call to action because the character of Melvina Old Lodge, who appears only briefly, is unforgettable. Marshall's main characters primarily live on the fictional Smokey River Reservation in South Dakota, but plot lines extend to traditional Lakota territory on the Northern Plains. His series is based on current issues facing Lakota people, including crime and the interface between tribal government, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the FBI.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. CIRCUMCISION CUTS THROUGH US ALL. In her eye-opening memoir, Georganne Chapin exposes the business of medical circumcision. This unnecessary yet most common pediatric surgery in the United States permanently reduces the size and alters the function of a boy's penis for the rest of his life. Every year, nearly 1.4 million baby boys are assaulted in American hospitals and doctors' offices where their foreskins are surgically amputated, subjecting them to pain, functional and psychological damage, and a forever-altered sexual experience. (Less than 2 percent of all circumcisions in the U.S. are done for religious reasons.) A long-time healthcare executive, Chapin serves as the founding executive director of Intact America, a nonprofit dedicated to ending the unethical genital cutting of all children. She weaves in her unusual upbringing and background as she chronicles how she got into "this penis business."As a preteen, Chapin was traumatized by the sight of her newborn brother's penis after two surgeries in his first week of life and her mother's resulting deep grief. When her own son was born, there was never a question that she and her Argentine husband would keep his genitals intact. At age eighteen, her son thanked her for that decision, and she knew she'd found the cause to which she would devote her life. After getting her law degree and becoming an adjunct professor at Pace Law School, she taught a health law course on bioethics and medical malpractice, part of which was a three-week mini course about infant circumcision that served as a case study of cognitive dissonance, medical fraud, and ethical bankruptcy. After meeting several of the leaders in the intactivist movement, including Marilyn Fayre Milos, known as the "mother of the movement," the innovative executive director of one of the first managed health care organizations in the country ended up accepting the responsibility of leading Intact America, which launched in 2008.In her memoir, she traces circumcision's U.S. roots from 19th Century fears of masturbation to stereotypes about race, class, religion, and male sexuality. She describes how what started as a way to keep men and women from enjoying sex morphed into a for-profit medical practice-one that is rare or unknown in Europe, non-Muslim Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. She reveals how physician organizations, especially the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), have worked for decades to fraudulently promote circumcision's supposed benefits and suppress facts about circumcision harm and deaths. Indeed, the AAP now characterizes male genital mutilation as a matter of "culture" and "parental preference"-a position that, conveniently, shields trade associations and their physician members from legal and financial liability. Chapin has listened to hundreds of stories about the trauma and harm caused by circumcision. She shares some of these stories to show how circumcision affects not only male children, but the men they become and those in their intimate circle, who love them. This thought-provoking book educates readers on how they can help put an end circumcision perpetuated by the fee-for-service medical machine. It is a punch-in-the-gut wake-up call that will enrage and empower anyone impacted by the multi-billion-dollar penis business. Those who would benefit from this book include: expectant parents, men who have suffered injuries, medical professionals, midwives, doulas, lactation specialists, librarians, and academics. "This Penis Business" should be required reading in fields ranging from bioethics to human sexuality to trauma-informed psychology to gender studies and more.…
