Von besonderen Interesse sind die zahlreichen Übungen zur Wortschatzerweiterung. Doch die übersichtliche Gestaltung ermöglicht es schnell, sich zurechtzufinden. Gerade musste ich einen schwierigen englischen Text durchsehen und ergänzendas Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English kam mir dabei sehr entgegen- Das Layout ist sehr übersichtlich, die Bilder und Skizzen sind äußerst illustrativ und ergänzen bestens die Erklärungen durch Worte (anders wäre es schwer möglich, z.B. die unterschiedlichen Musikinstrumente bloß durch Beschreibungen zu unterscheiden). - Praktisch ist die Angabe der Häufigkeit von Wörtern (sowohl im schriftlichen als auch im mündlichen Gebrauch), so kann man gut abschätzen, ob man beispielweise start, begin oder commence schreiben soll. - Kästen geben Informationen zu Wortgebrauch und häufigen Verbindungen (Colllocations) - wiederum oft nach mündlich informellem und schriftlichem Gebrauch getrennt. - In sog. word focus boxes wird der Wortschatz zu bestimmmten Themen aufgearbeitet, z.B. mealbreakfast, banquet, picnic, snack usw. - Noch viel angenehmer als Blättern ist freilich die Verwendung der CD-Rom, auf der weitere Fotos, Tausende Beispielssätze und unterschiedliche Suchmöglichkeiten das Finden des geeigneten Wortes erleichtern. (Es ist ja wirklich fragwürdig, warum man während der Arbeit am Computer ein Wort in einem Buch nachschlagen soll, wenn alle nötigen Informationen und fallweise kopierbare Textbeispiele mit ein, zwei Mausclicks zugänglich werden.
