Grey boards reasonably clean but corner bumped & edge-rubbed. Dark cloth spine frankly a mess - rear joint split and loosening, sp. was flapping adjacent to this but have done a basic, not terribly effective, repair job on that (at least it isn't actually flapping any more), label almost gone and what is left hardly legible, sp.cloth also faded and sl.wrinkled. This second edition 'Corrected and very considerably enlarged: the French part by the Abbe M'Quin and the English by Thomas Haigh' was 1st published in the mid-1820s. An amusing work, and no doubt of use to historians of the period. …

Colin Mackenzie (1795-1854), born in Edinburgh, was a writer, book producer, editor, translator and compiler. He wrote and/or helped produce works of non-fiction; including educational and informative works on chemistry, cookery, medicine, popular science, geography, history, economics and religion. His two earliest works, One Thousand Experiments in Chemistry (1821) and Five Thousand Receipts in all the Useful and Domestic Arts (1823) were the most popular books he was associated with. Five Thousand Receipts is a household economy compendium, filled with general medical information, health tips and receipts [recipes] for all kinds of concoctions, whether culinary, medicinal or for practical household needs. The work went through at least 26 editions between 1823 and 1864 and was particularly successful in America. The book is bound in contemporary or possibly original full leather boards with gold titling on the spine and 'Family Library' stamped in gold on the front board. The case of the book is in good + condition with scuffing and some staining to the leather on the boards. The leather on the rear and top front corners is worn with some damage and the bottom front corner is more noticeably damaged with loss. Pieces of leather are missing from both spine ends and there are two cracks in the leather running down the spine. The front and rear spine edges have a serviceable repair using strips of newer leather (probably early 20th century) that run down the spine edges. The contents are tight and clean apart from some scattered marks and small stains and some foxing to the original endpapers and the first and last few pages, including the title-page. The title-page also has some soiling and a name is written near the top front corner. The original front free endpaper is missing and has been replaced with a new sheet of paper and a repair has been carried out to the spine gutter of the front and rear endpapers, using a strip of brown cloth. The repair to the front endpapers is between the fixed endpaper and the title-page, with the new free endpaper being glued onto the cloth on the spine edge of the title-page. There is a personal book label on the front fixed endpaper and a name has been written on the rear fixed endpaper. Pages 363 to 382 protrude slightly from the fore edge of the text block.There may be some other minor faults that we have missed, and overall this is probably best regarded as being a sound reading and reference copy.…
