In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first impression. [10], 377, [1], cxxvi pp. 4to (26 cm). Second state of the first impression with cancels on three leaves (c1, B1, X3). One of 2000 copies issued. The poem concerns Lord Marmion who is after a favorite of Henry VIII, the wealthy heiress, Clara de Clare. He implicates her fiance, Sir Ralph De Wilto…n, in a treasonable plot, but eventually De Wilton has Marmion unmasked just as the battle of Flodden Field (one of the greatest disasters in Scottish history [1513]) begins. Marmion is killed in the battle while De Wilton regains his honor, estates, and Clara. The book was a tremendous success, despite its exceedingly high price, with at least three editions issued the same year. NCBEL III, 370. Ruff 59 (see pp.49-53). Front board very tender but threads still holding, joints rubbed, some minor rubbing along top edges and a few bands, otherwise a crisp, tight copy, gilt glowing, with some faint scattered foxing. A beautiful production. Full fine tooled pebbled calf, raised bands, gilt decorated compartments, outer gilt rules, elaborate inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, sewn-in bookmark.

In den Warenkorb8vo, (210mm.), (5-)54p. lacking the half-title. Some slight spotting mainly confined to the outer margins. [bound with] Edward SMEDLEY, THE DEATH OF SAUL AND JONATHAN. A Poem. London: Printed by W. Bulmer. for John Murray, and J. Deighton & Sons, Cambridge, 1814. 8vo, [6],33p. some spotting. Together 2 volumes in 1. . Contempora…ry half calf, backstrip tooled and ruled in gilt, shell pattern marbled paper sides and endleaves, front joint split but holding, fly-leaves rather spotted; stencilled ownership stamp of the Rev. W. Mason on the verso of the front free endleaf.(Isaac, 'checklist' in William Bulmer the fine printer in context 502a) Scott's poem first appeared in October 1815 and by this third edition of November of that year 10,000 copies had been printed. Despite its large sale the poem met with little critical approval and much widespread joking including a squib attributed by Lord Erskine: 'On Waterloo's ensanguined plain | Lie tens of thousands of the slain; | But none, by sabre or by shot, | Fell half so flat as Walter Scott.' Smedley's poem won the Seaton prize poem and offers 'a poignant lament on the biblical tragedy from 1 Samuel emphasising themes of loyalty, loss, and divine judgement.'.

In den WarenkorbFirst Edition of this Translation. in contemporary tree calf, spine simply ruled in gilt, red morocco label lettered in gilt, with the heraldic bookplate of Sir James Campbell of Stracathro. 8vo, (125 x 214mm), pp. [vi], 154, [1] errata, with the half-title, An anonymous verse translation of two plays by Racine. The first is Rac…ine?s final tragedy, Athalie, first performed in 1691 and considered one of his greatest achievements: Voltaire thought it the greatest triumph of the human mind while Flaubert, in Madame Bovary, ranked it as the masterpiece of the French stage. The second play translated here is the lesser-known Esther, 1689, a work in three acts written for the young ladies of Madame de Maintenon?s academy, the Maison Royale de Saint Louis. A note in the 1876 translation by Caroline Andrews reads: ?As the translator has followed closely the original, she hopes to recommend the same to the attention of lady educators? With a dedication to the Duchess of Gordon and a brief address to the reader: ?The Translator has often admired the sublimity of sentiment, and elegant simplicity that reign in the sacred dramas of Racine. He has reaped both pleasure and edification from the perusal of these pieces, so justly esteemed by those who have a relish for sacred poetry: Hence he has been induced to believe that a translation of them, imitating closely the simple manner and style of the originals, might afford a similar gratification to the well-disposed British reader? In den Warenkorb8vo, pp. iii-xv, [2, contents], 17-448; includes preliminary blank, or contents leaf misbound?; an excellent copy, uncut in original boards though rebacked with white paper spine, lightly soiled, traces of glue to endpapers, period-style paper label to spine.Rare late edition of Zimmermann's immensely popular Solitude, first pub…lished 1756, the first appearing in English in 1779. Its combination of rational philosophy and irrational, romantic melancholy caught the mood of the later eighteenth century. Zimmermann's own romantic eccentricity comes out through moments such as his conversations about universal truths with his barber, who is unwise enough to remark 'it's rather hot today' while cutting the philosopher's hair. OCLC notes only five copies of this edition, at Belfast Central Library, Edinburgh University, NLS, Columbia and Queen's, Ontario.
