In den WarenkorbFirst edition of one of Shiel's last novels before his decade-long hiatus from writing that began in 1913. The story proper is preceded by a lengthy essay, "On Reading", his "tremendous and involved philosophical treatise" (Morse), where he talks of the modern novel's "cackle and chaos of cacophony". This Knot of Life, a romance…, involves the hero in the grip of a duplicitous Jewish secretary (more than a hint of Shiel's well-known antisemitism here) and incarceration in an asylum, before the fiery death of the malefactors. "The first few chapters are stifled in dialogue, but once it picks up momentum, it runs with all the speed, novelty, and poetry of any Shiel adventure" (Morse). This copy is in the secondary binding, with the publisher's name given as "Everett" at the foot of the spine (rather than "Everett & Co.") and with no blind stamped design on the back cover. Morse pp. 82-4. Octavo. Original red cloth, gilt-lettered spine and front cover, decoration and rules in black. Bookplate of Lewis (1884-1948) and Kitty Leonardt (1883-1976), members of the Birmingham family well-known in the 19th century as manufacturers of dip pens; the bookplate, an attractive 18th century street scene, is by Henry G. Walker (1876-1932) a Birmingham-based artist best known for his landscapes. Spine gently rolled and sunned, spine cracked but holding, light rubbing to spine ends and tips, edges and margins lightly foxed, old tape residue o bookplate, a few marginal pencilings. A very good copy.
