8vo, pp. 42; complete with initial leaf of verse (lacking in the BL copy), but without the final leaf of advertisements; a good clean copy, disbound. A very rare poem by William Huntington (1745-1813), eccentric preacher and minister, who a few years before had established the Providence Chapel in Titchfield St, London (he later added chapels at Lewes, Brighton, Newark and elsewhere), where he was a magnetic preacher and a flamboyant witness to the mercy of God - the 'S.S.' he added to his name (which was itself an invention - he had been born William Russel) stood for 'Sinner Saved'. The present peculiar poem, prefaced by a jocular dedication to Mistress Sangster who lived in City Road, is based on the biblical story of the Shunamite woman who provided food and a room for the prophet Elisha (2 Kings iv). Scarce: ESTC locates just seven copies of this poem, all but one (at William Jewell College, Missouri) of them in England.
