Paperback. Zustand: Good. Love Activism presents a daily, radical activism of kindness and a positive way to live against cruelty, violence, and injustice. This is realized through how we perform our work, what we do in our communities, and decisions we make each day. This form of activism is a holistic practice with eight beautiful elements: service, empathy, non-violence, self-care, hope, creativity, feminism, and mindfulness. Even when the dismantling of large and unjust structures, corporations, and institutions can seem daunting and disheartening, we can all make real impact in our daily lives. We can choose to live our lives as political statements. This is a profound and inspiring form of activism for ourselves, our communities, all living beings, and the earth.Love Activism is a book for those who seek a more kind and peaceful world. It provides inspiration and support for activists. Through stories, examples, and lists of practices, readers discover the different elements of Love Activism and how they can bring these practices into their lives. The book also includes interviews with ten activists throughout the United States who are involved in various types of activism in their communities. These individuals include the founder of a community garden organization; an art therapist; the founder of a food justice organization; and an individual involved with educating his community on printmaking as a form of activism. Because this book is meant to build community and foster discussion, it concludes with questions for self-reflection and reading groups. Now is the time to be brave and love powerfully.Stacy Russo, a librarian and professor at Santa Ana College in Santa Ana, California, is a poet, writer, and artist. She believes in libraries as community spaces; lifelong learning; public education; peaceful living; feminism; and the power of personal story. Stacy is the editor of Life as Activism: June Jordan's Writings from The Progressive (Litwin Books, 2014) and the author of We Were Going to Change the World: Interviews with Women from the 1970s and 1980s Southern California Punk Rock Scene (Santa Monica Press, 2017) and The Library as Place in California (McFarland, 2007). Her articles, poetry, and reviews have appeared in Feminist Teacher, Feminist Collections, American Libraries, Library Journal, Counterpoise, Chaffey Review, and Serials Review. She holds degrees from the University of California, Berkeley; Chapman University; and San Jose State University. Stacy always takes her coffee black; eats chocolate every day; and loves to nap at the ocean.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Documenting Feminist Activism addresses the practical and theoretical challenges and advantages of researching, documenting, and archiving recent and contemporary activists in the feminist and queer movements. In the last few decades, the place and practice of activism has shifted from a physical headquarters where activists convene to plan and strategize, to the reality where planning happens at various desks and kitchen tables across the country (or world) and activists then convene at one site for an action (the prime example of this being the WTO protest in Seattle in 1999). So much of the work is taking place in the digital environment and/or within smaller do-it-yourself (DIY) and anarchist subcultures where ideas are often shared via zines and other ephemeral materials. The challenge of the archivist and the scholar, whose work is traditionally paper-based, is to keep up with the changing modes of communication of these individuals and organizations and to make sure these activists' work is not left out of the historical record. Activists, archivists, librarians, and scholars address the following issues and topics: the practical material challenges of documenting and archiving contemporary activism; theoretical perspectives and conversations; online communities and communications; third wave feminism/youth and queer cultures/subcultures; the move from paper to digital archives and documents; zines; and the work of activists who employ creative/artistic/cultural approaches to work for social justice.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Where and who are all the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) community college librarians? BIPOC community college librarians provide unequaled and increasingly necessary support to their institutions. The BIPOC community college librarian is often disembodied and our work runs the spectrum between the visible and invisible. The added labor of being the "only" adds an extra layer of emotional, physical, and cognitive work that often goes unrecognized. The relationship between the library and student success has been thoroughly researched and assessed, however, the role of the community college librarian is often excluded. There is even more exclusion, forced invisibility, and censorship for the BIPOC LIS (library information services) worker.Librarians, library workers, and libraries are part of the student success pathway. Library departments (services) provide distinct face-to-face and online access points for the campus community. Community colleges have long been the setting of fundamental education, workplace development, and life skills across the country for working class communities. Having been seen as a gateway to economic mobility, community college is an equalizer, unifier, and launching pad for student excellence and innovation. However, the student diversity of our campuses is not always representative of staff and faculty. Interestingly, student services / academic affairs units make up more BIPOC workers than instructional units within the institution. Some of the failures in the community college landscape today are the lack of BIPOC workers in the library department, emotional taxation, extra labor, structural racism, and tokenistic legacies. BIPOC librarian faculty have cultural taxation not captured in our tenure or acknowledged institutionally. BIPOC librarians' work and labor in community colleges deserves to be amplified, documented, and valued. Our unity is our shared community of practice now and into the future.Building Our Own provides perspectives in the form of critiques, reflections, narratives, frameworks, and pedagogies from a BIPOC lens. Editors are inspired to gather and curate a collection of work to reveal the realities of BIPOC library workers' contributions, critical insights, and lived experiences in the community college setting. Building Our Own is part of the Series of Critical Race Studies and Multiculturalism in LIS with Litwin Books and Library Juice Press under the series editors, Rose L. Chou and Annie Pho. Paperback. Zustand: Good. Psychology is a factor in virtually every aspect of librarianship. Beyond the expected psychological issues inherent in any organization, there are psychological dimensions that are unique to library work. The Psychology of Librarianship addresses both of these: how traditional organizational psychology applies to librarianship, and how library work involves unique psychological situations. The thirteen essays examine topics such as the role of social psychology in information literacy, the problems of stereotypes within the library profession, addictions and the library, and technology anxiety. The Psychology of Librarianship focuses attention on this heretofore neglected aspect of libraries, and provides signposts for future research.…
