Samuel Butler (1835-1902) was an English novelist and critic, probably best known for his satirical utopian novel Erewhon, published in 1872. In this short essay the author muses on authorship and books and compares the loss of a favorite book in the British Museum to the loss described in William Wordsworth's poem "Lucy." The book is bound in the original brown wraps with black titling on the front. The book is in excellent condition with light bumping to the spine ends and a little rubbing along the top edge. The author/artist died, of motor neurone disease, on 18 April 2005 - "fearing", wrote his Guardian obituarist, Maev Kennedy, "that the art he and his father [Laurence Whistler] recreated and perfected might die with them. There is no full-time course in glass engraving in the country, a fact he described, sadly, as 'reprehensible'."
