Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. 2 volumes, 8vo., [iv, 320pp.] + [iv, 364pp.], photogravure frontispiece of Ignaz Moscheles to volume 1, occasional light scattered spotting to endpapers, marbled endpapers, top edges blocked in gilt, bound in contemporary dark green half calf over marbled boards, gilt decorated spines in compartments with raised bands. A generally VG+ set lightly rubbed on some extremities in attractive bindings. Isaac Ignaz Moscheles (1794 1870) was a cosmopolitan virtuoso whose long career spanned the greatest period in the development of the piano, from Beethoven to Liszt. Stemming from the German-speaking Jewish community of Prague, he emerged as a new star at the age of fourteen, when he played a piano concerto of his own in public. Soon he embarked on a career as a freelance musician in Vienna. In a short time he became well known throughout Europe. In 1821 he paid his first visit to London, which became his home for more than twenty years. In 1846 Mendelssohn, his intimate friend and colleague, appointed him the principal teacher of piano at the recently formed Leipzig Conservatorium. There he passed on his knowledge and vast experience to a new generation. Much of what is known about Moscheles's life is derived from this biography, with selections from his diaries and correspondence, written after his death by his wife, Charlotte, and published in Leipzig, Germany in 1872. The book also gives lively portraits of his era and of his musical contemporaries.…

Armadale was first published in 1864-66, it is the third of his four great novels of the 1860s: after The Woman in White (1859-60) and No Name (1862), and before The Moonstone (1868). It was serialised almost concurrently in the United States, appearing in Harper's New Monthly Magazine between December 1864 and July 1866. It first appeared in book form as a two volume literary edition in May 1866.
