Thus Richard Ford, in A Hand-Book for Travellers in Spain (1845). When George Borrow was in Santiago de Compostela in August 1837, he found in Rey Romero the very antithesis of Ford's stereotype - an enthusiast who would send almost any customer away with one of his Testaments. One of many vivid images from the Lavengro Press's characteristically interesting Occasional Paper; the author is Richard Ford's biographer.

"George Borrow's The Bible in Spain, the account of his Peninsular campaign for the British and Foreign Bible Society, ends not in Spain but in Morocco. The writer spent six weeks in Tangiers, August-September 1839, during which time, ever…the word collector, he filled a notebook with words and expressions from the local Arabic . . . By his own account, Borrow was no scholar. His intention in compilation was practical, not academic. Hopkins quotes a passage from Lavengro where the author contrasts his love of languages and his love of horses. Were it not for the latter, he writes, 'I might, otherwise, have become a mere philologist; one of those beings who toil night and day in culling useless words for some opus magnum which Murray will never publish, and nobody ever read . . .' Rough, ready and miscellaneous though Borrow's Vocabulary may be, it is of unusual value, reports Hopkins, as one of the earliest records of spoken Moroccan Arabic. He bravely addresses Borrow's 'transcriptional chaos' and notes a Jewish linguistic bias, which leads him to speculate that Borrow's principal source may have been Hayim Ben Attar, the young, Fez-born Jewish servant in the house where Borrow stayed whom he then took with him back to England. One wonders at their conversation. If the phrases Borrow jots down are any guide, it took some strange turns. 'Hassan told me the women were handsome'; 'The remedy for it is to eat butter in the morning'; 'Christians are bad'; 'Moslems may have 3 wives'; 'are you not afraid of witches'; 'if it wont but continue it were well'" (The Book Collector).

'Plenty,' said the old fellow, 'but not so many as formerly. At one time Man was full of witches and wizards; one of the Kings of Man was a…wizard, and a famous one too, and a good friend to the country, for when enemies came to invade it, he would raise by art witchcraft such clouds and vapours that it was impossible for anyone to see it. He was a giant and had three legs, and they are his legs which you see on the side of the steamer, for those three legs of his are the arms of Man.' 'What was his name?' said I. 'I believe he was called King Horry', said the old man . . ." Sir Angus Fraser part-edited these notebooks before his death, "and Ann Ridler, with customary thoroughness, has adorned and improved his work, adding six appendices, including Borrow's stepdaughter Henrietta Clarke's own account of the family excursion. Clarke is a genial companion ('I must now mention that strange grotesque animal the tailless Manx Cat or Rumpy as it is called, it resembles those in appearance described by Sir Stamford Raffles'), but less inquisitive than Borrow; however, as Ridler points out, she is a useful counterpoint to her stepfather, who often conveys the impression that he is a lone explorer on his antiquarian hikes, the fearless pedestrian pioneer. Other appendices include Andrew Dakyns on Borrow and T. E. Brown, and an essay by Ridler questioning whether Borrow made a return visit to the island in 1870" (The Book Collector).
