Analysis of the date obtained from the survey carried out on a random population of 300 respondents from the telephone directory shows that choosing a home loan institution on the basis of professional advice is the most frequently cited choice criterion on the UK, followed by brand loyalty for the US market and finally for the Mauritian market, the most important factor comes to pricing. Furthermore, various surface water quality parameters of inland waters have been monitored using hyperspectral images acquired by airborne systems. However, the large size of these images raises the need for efficient data reduction. A new type of self- organising weighted neural networks was proposed and used for efficient reduction, mapping and clustering of large high-dimensional data sets, such as hyperspectral images. Finally, the analysis can be reversed to generate high resolution spectra from simpler measurements using multiple colour-filter mosaics, as suggested in the thesis. Registration aligns two faces and makes a comparison possible between the two surfaces. In the literature, best results have been achieved by a one-to-all approach, where a test face is aligned to each gallery face separately. To overcome the computational bottleneck of this approach, we examine registration based on an Average Face Model (AFM). To improve the registration, we propose to group faces and register with category-specific AFMs. We see that gender and morphology classes exist, when faces are categorized with the clustering approach. As another factor causing diversity in the face space, we explore expression variations. To reduce the negative effect of expressions in registration, we divide the facial surface into logical segments, and for each segment we create an Average Region Model (ARM). Registering via each ARM separately, we examine regional recognition performance. In order to accomplish the fundamentals of music such as pitch, tone, and rhythm at the beginning stage rather than teaching them in the private lesson together with the instrumental technique, the instructional package was integrated with general music teaching. The population was given the private violin lessons and general music group lessons with the researcher for 12 weeks. The population in this study was 28 students between six to twelve years old who had never studied playing violin before. After 12 weeks of instruction, the data from formative evaluations, summative evaluation and the students'' attitude evaluation forms were collected for statistical analysis. It was found that the violin instructional package had an efficiency of 95.83/97.5 which was higher than the expected efficiency of 80/80. Termed negative priming, this effect is believed to mark the after effect of an inhibitory component of selective attention. Consistently observed in adults, evidence for negative priming in children is tenuous. In this study, it was argued that distractor inhibition in children may be more likely to appear in contexts where anticipated selection difficulty is thoroughly and consistently maintained. Results from three experiments examining negative priming effects in children aged 5 to 12 years were consistent with this hypothesis. Intact negative priming was observed in even the youngest children, with no age- related differences apparent. Moreover, and similar to adults, negative priming was produced for a range of stimuli including familiar, novel and 3-D impossibly shaped items. Some evidence for long-term negative priming effects was also obtained for the oldest children.
