Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Just like Robert Tanitch's critically acclaimed book on the London stage in the twentieth century, this wonderful new book is 'fascinating - absolutely wonderful for finding what you aren't looking for'. Presented chronologically, the concise and well-crafted entries describe all of the major new p…lays and revivals, great actors, famous performances and spectacular productions, with a wicked sprinkling of acerbic reviews and spicy criticism. Over 250 contemporary illustrations of theatres, actors, playbills and productions help evoke the dramatic atmosphere of a period in which the lavish was expected - including erupting volcanoes, one performance with a cast of 650, and a reconstruction of Henley Regatta, complete with real boats and 200 tons of water. This is a joyous celebration of 100 years of all things theatrical. A total pleasure to dip into - and a real feast for the eye - this book is a must for theatre-lovers the world over. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. In such a large geographical area we find a great deal of diversity of experience and history. Life on the Pennines or the North York Moors has always been very different from life in low-lying agricultural districts such as Holderness or the Humberhead Levels. In many ways, the farmers of the Vale… of York have had more in common with those the Midland Plain than with the miners, steel workers and textile workers of their own county. Until relatively recently people felt that they belonged to their own parish and to a wider neighbourhood which was bounded by the nearest market towns and which they called their 'country'. Relatively few people travelled to other parts of Yorkshire or had any contact with the 'strangers' who lived beyond their own district. Although the Elizabethan and Stuart gentry were conscious of belonging to Yorkshire, and outsiders made comments (usually adverse) on Yorkshiremen as a breed apart, ordinary folk did not have this sense of belonging to Yorkshire until quite late in its history. The success of the Yorkshire County Cricket Club from the 1890s onwards seems to have been the great stimulus that united Yorkshire people, and which gave them a sense of their superiority. The history of Yorkshire is more varied than that of any other English county. The changing fortunes of the many different regions of the county - from Pennine moors and valley towns to the flats of Holderness; from industrialised cities to quiet market towns - are a major theme in this important new book. Outsiders may recognise a Yorkshire accent, but local people can place a speaker much more precisely in a particular 'country'. It is this diversity of experience within the historic county of Yorkshire that David Hey seeks to capture in this important and fascinating new book. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The thirty-three cases in this excellent book give a unique and fascinating insight into life in the Victorian period, in Liverpool and beyond. Although murder can never be condoned, it is clear from the accounts of the lives of the accused and their victims that the world they inhabited was a hars…h one, where people were pushed to the very end of their tethers on a daily basis. It seems little wonder sometimes that people snapped under the strain, and this is clearly what happened in some of the cases described here. Others, however, are much more brutal and premeditated and still have the ability to shock 150 years on. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Bath is one of the most popular and significant tourist destinations in Britain. No fewer than four million visitors each year visit the much-renovated Roman Baths, marvel at the sites of this World Heritage city, or simply meander through its now carefully conserved eighteenth-century streets. For… a few hours before they are whisked away to Stratford-upon-Avon, Edinburgh or London, they absorb the carefully presented image of Bath as ancient spa, elegant Georgian city and haunt of the likes of Richard 'Beau' Nash or Jane Austen. Bath has always tried to present itself in a favourable light. The true picture of Bath throughout its long and varied history is of course much fuller, more interesting and varied than the facade presented to casual visitors. From its earliest known history as spa during the Roman period, Bath transformed itself into Saxon monastic town and subsequently Norman cathedral city. It developed into a regional market and - perhaps surprisingly - a centre of the woollen trade during the Middle Ages, before becoming probably the most important health resort of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Thereafter, rapid expansion in the Georgian period created an enduring architectural legacy which made Bath the country's foremost fashionable resort, attracting increasing numbers of visitors. From the later 1700s, the city experienced some years of relative decline, from which it re-emerged, this time as a favoured place of genteel residence in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This theme of constant re-invention now sees Bath attempt to become a 'festival city', in the market for cultural tourism, while the long-anticipated opening of a new thermal spa should bring a new lease of life to the hot springs which, of course, represent Bath's very oldest attraction, and in many ways its very raison d'etre. This book goes beyond the narrow, popular image of Bath to explore 2000 years of extraordinary change, variety and interest, focusing wherever possible on the lives of ordinary residents, and seeking to explain as well as to chronicle Bath's truly unique historical legacy. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Fran Randle, Bill Shankly, Violet Carson, Les Dawson, Gracie Fields, as well as tacklers, overlookers, weavers and other mill workers, were interviewed for this gem of a book. A tackler comes to Oldham, in the pouring rain, and knocks on a door. Landlady opens the door and says, `Yes?' `Can I stay…here for t'week?' `Aye,' says the landlady, `you can, but you'll get dam'd wet!' This is a classic example of a tackler's tale a story of gormlessness, delivered with a straight face. All of old Lancashire is covered, including Manchester and Liverpool, and former Daily Express columnist Geoffrey Mather reveals a great talent for amusing observation and wry comment. The result is an un-put-downable, rib-tickling collection of stories, recollections and commentary by the author on what it means to be a Lancastrian, then and now. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Towards the end of the eighteenth century Lancaster stood on the brink of great change. During one of the most tumultuous, terrifying and important periods in British history, the city experienced rapid boom, followed by equally rapid decline. But history can only be fully understood by looking at…the people who shaped the events, and at those who are most affected by them, and it is these human stories that are told in "The Making of Lancaster: People, Places & War, 1789-1815". The experiences of seamen, farmers, women, the poor, slavers, clergy, soldiers, politicians and gentry all feature, together building a fascinating picture of the city. Through these accounts of the lives of their forbears, present-day Lancastrians have a window on their city during a time of significant growth and change, evidence of which can still be seen in the buildings and streets today. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The city of Sheffield has long been synonymous with cutlery and steel, and most previous books have understandably concentrated on the momentous changes which industrialisation wrought on the area over the last two hundred years. The figures are astonishing: as early as the seventeenth century thre…e out of every five men in the town worked in one branch or another of the cutlery trades and, in all, Sheffield had a smithy to every 2.2 houses; a hundred years later there were as many as six watermills per mile on rivers such as the Don, Porter and Rivelin, driving a wide range of industrial machinery and processes; local innovations included Old Sheffield Plate, crucible steel and stainless steel; during the mid-nineteenth century 60 per cent of all British cutlers worked in the Sheffield area, and the region manufactured 90 per cent of British steel, and nearly half the entire European output; small, specialised workshops producing a wide range of goods such as edge-tools and cutlery existed side by side with enormous steel factories (it has been estimated that in 1871 Brown's and Cammell's alone exported to the United States about three times more than the whole American output). Yet, as David Hey shows, the city's history goes back way beyond this. Occupying a commanding position on Wincobank, high above the River Don, are the substantial remains of an Iron Age hillfort, built to defend the local population. Celts, Vikings and Anglo-Saxons came and left a legacy recalled in many local names. By the twelfth century William de Lovetot had built a castle at the confluence of the Don and the Sheaf, and it is likely that is was he who founded the town of Sheffield alongside his residence. A century later can be found the first reference to a Sheffield cutler, so industry in the area can be said to be at least 700 years old, and no doubt stretches back even further. Highly respected local historian David Hey has written a fine, up-to-date history of Sheffield. His excellent text is now complemented by over 300 illustrations, many in colour. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. While an undergraduate Carl Chinn recalls a lecturer postulating that working-class women were downtrodden and brow-beaten by their men: 'I remember thinking, "They're not in my family" .I lacked the confidence to disagree, and to tell him that I knew many working-class women who were at least the…equals of their men and who could fight physically. Indeed the first fight I had seen was when I was ten. My Nan had taken me and my brother down the Villa. An away fan had pinched Our Kid's scarf and Our Nan, just four foot eleven tall, turned round and laid the chap out with one punch. A tough woman whose fore-finger had been torn off by a machine at work, Our Nan was the daughter, mother and grandmother of strong, working-class women.' Often strong physically, women of the urban poor worked from when they were toddlers until they died. They worked inside and outside the house, cooking, washing, cleaning and planning how to get by; they worked as domestics in the houses of a middle class often arrogant and condescending in their attitudes towards them; they worked in factories, shops, mills and workshops; they worked in their neighbourhoods in providing vital services for their neighbours. Often earning her own income and receiving the earnings of her children, it was the mother who was in charge of the daily battle against hunger and hardships. Such supreme dedication and true grit earned these women the central role in the family and fostered the devotion of their children, who recognised a mother's command of the household finances, her ability to maintain a family's self-sufficiency through careful housekeeping and creative cooking, and her valiant efforts to stay clean and respectable. Married daughters chose to live close to their mothers, forming extended families in settled neighbourhoods and furthering cementing strong kinship ties. Older married women who were grannies and aunts held sway over large familial networks, and from this position of importance many of them achieved status in their neighbourhoods as layers-out, unofficial midwives, wise women, custodians of the moral code and guardians of the group consciousness. The women of the urban poor worked all their lives for their families and neighbours: they deserve our respect and admiration. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (New, Paperback, 2007 ). 2007 1st edition. 8vo paperback (241 x 168mm). Ppxv,320. B/w photographs & illustrations, bibliography. Fine unread copy. In recent years, field sports of all descriptions including even angling, have fallen foul of an energetically… evangelised official ideology. Despite this, field sports remain an important part of the lives of a significant portion of the population. The author examines the place of field sports historically and socially, relying heavily on secondary sources. Somewhat implausibly, Hoyle maintains that this book is "surprisingly, perhaps, .the first attempt to offer a proper historical perspective on the subject of field sports in England." This probably hangs on the author's interpretation of the word "proper". An interesting read containing contributions from many authors, with much useful material and an extensive and useful bibliography. Chapters include: Field sports as history; Royalty and the diversity of field sports, c1840-1981; Sport and the survival of landed society in late victorian Suffolk; The shooting party - the associational cultures of rural and urban elites; Wildfowling, its evolution as a sporting activity; 'A delightful sport with peculiar claims' - the specificities of otter hunting, 1850-1939; Science, sport and the otter, 1945-1978; the development of salmon angling in the nineteenth century; Starting a hare - exploring the history of coursing since the mid-nineteenth century; Foxhunting and the Yeomanry - county identity and military culture; The fortunes of English foxhunting in the twentieth century - the case of the Oakley Hunt. Contributors include R.W. Hoyle, Nicholas Mansfield, Edward Bujak, Mark Rothery, John Martin, Daniel Allen, Charles Watkins, David Matless, Paul Merchant, Harvey Osborne, Ian Roberts. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. NORTH SHIELDS has its roots in the founding of Tynemouth Priory in the 7th century, although its life began with a cluster of riverside shelters for fishermen in the 13th. Subsequently, the town's development was continually thwarted by the bullying tactics of its neighbour Newcastle upon Tyne, and… North Shields' fortunes fluctuated greatly over the centuries. It was not until the 1800s that it was free to develop without restraint. Telling the fascinating life story of this North Tyneside town, right up to the recent past, Danny Lawrence's book is both a comprehensive history and a kind of 'Who Do You Think You Are?' for those with North Shields' origins. Woven into the history are descriptions of the conditions which their forebears were forced to endure over centuries before working people secured the political, economic and social rights taken for granted today. Shiels to Shields is a lively, enlightening, well illustrated account which will be of huge appeal to anyone with local connections, as well as to those interested in British history generally. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. 200 years ago, in 1819, the Lancaster Canal was officially completed. It represented a new and bright future for all those who traded between Preston and Kendal. It was to become a vital navigable artery during Britains industrial heyday, and also a very comfortable way for paying passengers to tra…vel throughout north Lancashire. After many years of sterling service as a working canal, it is now hugely popular with boaters, walkers, cyclists and runners. One of only a handful of coastal canals in the country, it is easily accessible and well maintained, travelling through beautiful and varied countryside. In the fi rst half of this excellent book, author Robert Swain outlines the history of the canal, from its construction (including the internationally renowned Lune Aqueduct), through its trading days, to its demise and then rebirth as an invaluable leisure resource. Part two is a guide to the entire canal today, pointing out and explaining the hundreds of fascinating features to be seen along its length. Published to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the opening, the book is full of interesting facts and beautiful pictures, and is the perfect companion for anyone who wishes to learn about, explore and enjoy the Lancaster Canal. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. This unique book reveals a fascinating and little known part of Lancashire's history. Digging deep into the archives of newspapers from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the author has unearthed a wealth of information about the county's dance musicians. During this period, most villages had…their own dance bands - referred to as string bands - which played a huge part in the social lives of their respective communities. Although band members were mainly men, many bands did also include women and child musicians, as the wonderful pictures in this book show. These black and white snapshots are complemented by old adverts for the performances in venues right across the region. As well as the many snippets from newspapers, the author has also gathered stories and memories from the relatives and descendants of some of the musicians, bringing this hitherto unexplored aspect of our social history instantly to life. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Former Cathedral Education Officer Peter Kennerley has had unlimited access to the vast archives and he has woven the facts into a fascinating and lively narrative which truly brings the characters and events to life. What soon becomes clear is that there are two separate but interwoven threads running through this unique chronicle. First, there is the story of the building itself its architect and the hundreds of craftsmen who worked in stone, brick, wood and glass. Second, there is also the broader story of the building of a cathedral community in the heart of a great modern city. No one reading this brilliant account could fail to be awed by the vision that conceived of such a structure, nor by the skill and tenacity that went into its creation. It is small wonder that it still plays such an important part in the life of Liverpool in the twenty-first century. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The historic county of Yorkshire lasted for about 1,000 years. Its administrative structure was swept away in 1974, but its distinctive identity is still clearly recognised by its own people and by outsiders. Yorkshire was the largest English county. The three Ridings of Yorkshire covered about an…eighth of the whole of the country, stretching from the river Tees in the north to the Humber in the south, and from the North Sea to the highest points of the Pennines. In such a large area there was a huge diversity of experience and history. Life on the Pennines or the North York Moors, for example, has always been very different from life in low-lying agricultural districts such as Holderness or the Humberhead Levels. And the fisherfolk of Staithes or Whitby might not readily recognise the accents, ways or customs of the cutlery makers of Hallamshire, still less perhaps of the farmers of Wensleydale or Craven. In some ways, this diversity makes Yorkshire the most interesting of England's historic counties, a microcosm of the country as a whole. Its variety and beauty also help to explain why Yorkshire is now such a popular tourist desination. Until quite recently people felt that they belonged to their own local area or 'country'. Few people travelled very far, and it was not until the late nineteenth century that the success of the Yorkshire County Cricket Club seems to have forged the idea of Yorkshire as a singular identity, and which gave its people a sense of their superiority. This single volume describes the broad sweep of Yorkshire's history from the end of the last Ice Age up to the present day. To do so Professor Hey has had to tell the story of each particular region and of each town. He talks about farming and mining, trade and industry, fishing and ways of life in all parts of the county. Having lived, worked, researched, taught and walked in the county for many years, he has amassed an enormously detailed knowledge and understanding of Yorkshire. The fruits of his work are presented here in what has been described as 'a bravura performance - by one of the Yorkshire's finest historians'. With a particular emphasis on the richness of landscape, places and former ways of life, this important book is a readable, informative and fascinating overview of Yorkshire's past and its people. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Colour painting, colour photographs throughout, maps, bibliography. Fine unread copy. Lancashire's River Ribble rises, controversially enough, in Yorkshire. Despite this fact, Dr…. Malcolm Greenhalgh, noted Lancastrian angling author and biologist, has devoted much of his professional life to its study. The river meets the sea at Preston, the author's home town. In this book he presents the results of his fascination with the Ribble Valley. He discusses local history, archaeology, land use and the environment, with much on the river itself, its tributaries (the Hodder, Calder, Douglas and others), and its large and impressive estuary. Authoritative, thorough and readable, with many excellent photographs. PREVIOUS PRICE GBP 17.99.
