The detailed results and calculations of a series of important experiments on the resistance of water to moving bodies, conducted by Colonel Mark Beaufoy under the auspices of the Society at Greenland Dock from 1793-98. The experiments demonstrated the comparative advantages and disadvantages arising from the form of all kinds of navigable vessels, thus aiding in shipbuilding design, and were the first practical verification in England of Euler's theorems on the resistance of fluids. Only a limited number of copies of the present work were printed, at the expense of Henry Beaufoy, the author's son, and gratuitously distributed to public bodies and individuals interested in naval architecture.
