Gandhiji and development journalism. 5. Conclusion. Appendix. Bibliography. Index. Gandhian journalism began in India nearly 140 years after the first newspaper was started by a European James Augustus Hickey in 1780. Since then very few publications came into existence which were launched both by the Britishers and Indians. Prominent among them were Rajarammohan Roy's Sambad kaumadi which was launched in 1822 while Fardoonji Murzban started the Vernacular newspapers in Gujarati Bombay Samachar in the same year. It was interesting to note that all the English dailies had 4000 subscribers out of which 125 were Indian subscribers in 1823. Mahatma Gandhi was instrumental in launching Indian Opinion in 1903 a weekly which started publication in four languages English Hindi Tamil and Gujarati with an intention to serve all Indians in South Africa. Two close associates of Gandhiji Madanjit Vyavaharik and Manshuklal Hiralal Nazar launched Indian Opinion on June 4 1903. As the two gentlemen could not run the journal the responsibility fell on the shoulders of Gandhiji who took over the journal in October 1904. His friend Albert West who gave up his business as a printer was managing it while Gandhiji was editing the journal with the sole intention of educating and mobilizing Indians through the weekly columns on various aspects of life. The journal in particular carried the popular biographical sketches of eminent men in many parts of the world such as Count Tolstoy Abraham Lincoln George Washington and Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar. The reader will find it very informatic useful for students to understand Gandhian views and ways of effective writing. 88 pp.

The process of strengthening of local governments is welcome step accepted by all sections of the society. The government has implemented the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendment Act (CAA) for strengthening the grassroots level of governments in rural as well as urban areas. But the functioning of the PRIs in India during the last one and a half decade shows that the state governments have not made serious or sincere attempts to endow the Panchayats with adequate functional responsibilities powers and access to productive resources. Moreover resource inadequacy coupled with lack of appropriate functional responsibilities and powers hade made these bodies extremely weak. With their meagre revenue base and unimpressive revenue administration the PRIs are constrained to lead a miserable existence. Against this backdrop this anthology critical analysis of various aspects of the subject and makes valuable suggestions for revamping the finances of the PRIs in India. 334 pp.

This book described the root causes of the present Indian social dys functioning by renouncing the Indian social values as sociability truthfulness simple living and high thinking homogeneity and co operation the main reason he pointed out is the present system of formal education which was imposed by the then British India Company Government on the advice of Lord McCauley in 1833 A.D. for their own ends. The alienistic system of Indian formal education which is still being followed by the Indians and has totally killed the Indian culture. And now the old Indian social values like sociability morality co operation and sharing love and affection work culture and sharing have been damaged. The man has become greedy self centred and acquisitive. The present education system is only examination based. It has no place for inculcation of good life habits in the youngers which are necessary for their enculturation. And he laid emphasis for the removal of all social stigmas which can only be possible by the reformation of present educational system then only our culture can be revived. He also laid stress for the removal of gender bias aesthetic education sociability and following the teaching professional ethics by the teachers etc. This book will be useful for the educators. 384 pp.
