Translated and provided with notes by the Georgian émigré prince and scholar Mikheil Tsereteli, this extremely rare volume not only gave Georgians access to the oldest epic poem in the world, but through its philological commentary investigated the links of their own language and culture to that of ancient Mesopotamia. - Translating from the twelve-tablet epic discovered in the library of Ashurbarnipal, Tsereteli renders it into Georgian and provides forty pages of commentary, laying out the history not only of the work but of the Akkadian and Sumerian cultural world. He sketches its enduring impression it made on the world, including on Georgia: the seven-day week and the names for the days in various dialects of Georgian are traced via Greek to Mesopotamian origins. - Born to a noble family in the Imereti region of Georgia, Mikheil Tsereteli (1878-1965) studied in Germany but returned to Georgia following its independence in 1918, serving as an ambassador and professor. Following the Soviet annexation of Georgia he taught in Brussels, Berlin, and Munich. He was known chiefly for his contributions to the study of Mesopotamian and ancient Caucasian history. - The discovery of the twelve tablets containing the Standard Babylonian version of the Epic of Gilgamesh in the Library of King Ashurbarnipal in Nineveh in 1853 was a seismic event in the history of world literature. This recension was created sometime between 1300 and 1000 BCE and divided into twelve tablets, on the basis of much older oral tradition and disjoined written episodes relating the deeds of the great King Gilgamesh of Uruk and his companion Enkidu. The oldest texts discussing Gilgamesh may be as early as the Third Dynasty of Ur, or c. 2100 BCE. - Rare: the Press of the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes served the small Georgian Catholic community of Istanbul, and all works produced by it are scarce. No copies of this work could be found on Worldcat, and only one institutional example could be identified worldwide, in the Tbilisi National Science Library. The book was reprinted in facsimile in 2010, but original 1924 printings are an extreme rarity on the market. - The world's earliest epic, rendered for the first time into Georgian. - Light wear to edges and discoloration to spine. Interior crisp and clean, print on some pages somewhat faded but still all present and legible. Overall in very good condition. - From a French private collection.…
