In den WarenkorbNew and revised edition of this comprehensive guide to cutting clothes for Edwardian women, much expanded from the first of 1890. Interestingly includes numerous examples of early women's athletic wear, including a fencing dress, several pages dedicated to riding habits, a gymnastics dress and varying styles of bathing dresses m…ade from cotton twill. Rare, perhaps a handful of copies of this issue located institutionally. William Deskett Foot Vincent (1860-1926) was apprenticed to a woollen draper in Yeovil aged 13. He progressed to journeyman, plying his trade in several provincial towns eventually opening his own house in Oxford in 1881. In 1883 he graduated from the famous Tailor and Cutter Academy in Gerrard Street, and through his superior grasp of the subject he was invited to work on the Tailor and Cutter by John Williamson and Thomas Darwin Humphreys. Vincent became such a force in the tailoring trade that in 1895 he superseded Humphreys as the editor of the journal. Under his influence "the publishing house continued as a major influence until the 1960s" (Seligman, p.10). Seligman 1905.17. Quarto. Profusely illustrated with cutting diagrams in text. Original green cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, front cover triple panelled in gilt. Front endpaper with contemporary inscription and two newspaper articles tipped in with adhesive tape. Cloth worn, endpapers browned, several tears to contents repaired. A good copy.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition in book form, first impression, of this textbook for dressmaking meant to be used in classes run by the London County Council. This is uncommon, with just the British Library copy recorded in the UK. This copy is made up of two parts bound as one, the first introducing the basics of dressmaking using part measures…or graduated tapes and the second introducing the more complicated "direct measure" method. Both contain many illustrations and diagrams befitting a textbook, showing the learner different types of garment, how they fit on various body types, and how to cut individual pieces of fabric. The first part also comes with an appendix on sewing and the different types of stitch one would be expected to master. Prospectuses for the fashion magazines The Tailoress & Dress Cutter and The Ladies' Tailor are also bound in. Curiously the cover mistakes the title as "The L.S.C. System", confusing the London County Council with its partner institution the London School of Cutting. At thirteen, Vincent was apprenticed to a woollen draper in Yeovil. He progressed to journeyman, plying his trade in several provincial towns and opening his own house in Oxford in 1881. In 1883 he graduated from the famous Tailor and Cutter Academy in Gerrard Street, and through his superior grasp of the subject he was invited to work at the Tailor and Cutter by John Williamson and Thomas Darwin Humphreys. Vincent became such a force in the tailoring trade that in 1895 he superseded Humphreys as the editor of the Tailor and Cutter. Under his influence "the publishing house continued as a major influence until the 1960s" (Seligman, p.10). This volume was originally issued as two pamphlets, with Part II notably rarer than Part I. Seligman 1904.16. Two parts bound in one, octavo. Illustrations and advertisements in text. Original red cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, front cover with double gilt fillets, back cover with double blind fillets. Spine and corners bumped, a few marks to rear cover, light foxing to front free endpaper, some pages toned: a very good copy.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition of this guide to cutting clothes for Edwardian women. This work is institutionally rare, appearing in the libraries of LACMA, Miami University and the University of the Arts London. Tom Sawyers worked as a clothing cutter in West London and wrote for the periodical Ladies Tailor. This book features information on h…ow to create motor skirts, ladies' pantaloons, cycling skirts and diagrams of the patterns of various items of clothing. "For the first time a clear statement has been given of the various fittings of all garments, from the under-bodice, blouse, or vest, to the various over-fittings of coats and overalls, including ulsters, cloaks, capes, etc" (preface). LACMA and Miami University date this work from 1890, whereas University of the Arts London states a broader range of 1870-1910. Seligman 1890.12 Quarto. With diagrams to text. Original green cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, front cover panelled in gilt and blind, rear cover double panelled in blind. Cloth a little marked, indentations on spine, spine ends and tips rubbed and bumped, endpapers toned, light stain to title page. A very good copy.
