Scott Rathbone "Scotty" Beal (1890 - 1973) Was A Film Assistant Director. Born In Quinnesec, Michigan, He Began His Career As An Actor In 1915, Before Switching To The Other Side Of The Camera The Following Year. He Also Occasionally Doubled Up As A Production Manager And A Cinematographer. As An Assistant Director, He Worked On Tod Browning's Dracula (1931) And Robert Florey's Murders In The Rue Morgue' (1932). [See Wikipedia]. The Son Of Director Frank Beal And Actress Louise Lester, Scott Beal Was Born In Quinnesec, Michigan. After Gaining Some Experience As A Stage Actor, He Headed To California To Break Into The Film Industry. Although He Did Find A Few Jobs As An Actor, Most Of His Work Was Behind The Camera, As An Assistant Director, Camera Operator And Director. He Found His Niche As An Assistant Director, However, And Spent The Majority Of His Career In That Field, Gaining A Reputation As One Of The Most Respected A.D.S In The Business. He Received An Academy Award As Best Assistant Director In 1932, And Was Nominated For Another In 1935. [See Imdb]. John Clark "Jack" Okey (June 3, 1889 - January 8, 1963) Was An American Art Director. He Was Raised In Los Angeles And Attended The Harvard School For Boys. After Leaving, He Was Given Instruction In Art By His Uncle, The California Artist, J. Bond Francisco. While He Was In His Early 20S, He Traveled To Paris With His Friend Stanton Macdonald Wright, And Spent Several Years There Studying Art. Around The Time Of His Marriage In 1913, He Became Involved In The Nascent Film Industry In The Los Angeles Area And Was Involved In The Design And Construction Of Some Of The Earliest Studios There. He Continued In The Film Industry As An Art Director Until His Retirement In 1959. In The Mid-1930S He Spent Several Years In England Working For Alexander Korda, Designing Studios For Him. After His Return To The United States, He Spent The Remainder Of His Active Career Working For Rko. He Was Nominated For Two Academy Awards For Art Direction, 1929 And 1944; His Best Known Film Is "It'S A Wonderful Life".

A very rare copy of this landmark book by Alexander Ross, which has undergone professional restoration using traditional conservation methods and retaining the original leather. Half-title, title in red and black with engraved vignette of historian between allegorical figures of war and peace , browned, damp-stained towards end.  Very scarce with this imprint with only six copies listed by ESTC. [36], 647, [129] p. ; 2?. ESTC R470984; for John Clark, 1652; with only known copies held by the likes of Lambeth Palace and The Bodleian Library. 23cm x 44cm. A prolific writer and 'Chaplain-in-Ordinary' to King Charles I, Ross set out to complete Raleigh's celebrated work of the same title (1614), one of the most ambitious undertakings of the 17th century. It covers the period where Raleigh left off, before the birth of Christ, to the end of 1640, representing the ecclesiastical and civil passages of the greatest states, empires and kingdoms of the times. Ross was born in Aberdeen, educated at King's College before rising to become one of the most prolific conversationalists of his era, this book representing the pinnacle of his works.

Vol 1- A reprint of the 1845 edition, slim 4to, xxiv + pp28 complete with b/w frontis by William H. Wilkie after the bust of Poe in The University of Virginia Library, numbered to limitation page with small envelope to rear pastedown with titles labels ready to affix. Vol 2-facsimile of the 1827 edition First published in Boston by Calvin F. S. Thomas, small 12mo laid into a recession inside a volume with a few blank leaves and a printed limitation page, 8vo, pp40. Slipcase covered in textured paper with cork design in very good condition with a little rubbing to edges. Both volumes bound in same paper near fine although the silk tie ribbons have half detached but are present. Inside both Volumes all pages in near fine condition with the very odd spot of foxing.
