First edition, 2 volumes 4to, pp. [5], vi-xvi, 517, [2]; viii, 510, [30]; engraved frontispiece portrait; original blue-gray paper-covered boards, cream paper shelfback, over which an early rebacking to match, manuscript titling on spine; the rebacking at the base of the spine on volume II is a little problematic,… and while the bindings are soiled and worn, both volumes are sound and internally clean. While his views on ethnicity were (to put it politely) a bit on the whacky side, particularly with regard to the Celts, the Goths, and the Picts, the book remains of value for the ancient texts and documents he collected.
