Barkers began as a small drapery business in 1870. It grew rapidly to become one of London's largest and most well-known department stores. The company played a significant role in establishing Kensington High Street as one of London's principal shopping destinations for most of the twentieth century. Very scarce.

Barker, U.S. Army, was the 43d Division Artillery Commander. He served in the campaigns in New Caledonia, Guadalcanal, Russell Islands, New Georgia - Munda, Baanga, Arundel - Kolombangara, New Guinea, Luzon - Philippines, Cabanatuan. He was awared the Silver Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star, Air Medal. From the preface: "Its original members were National Guardsmen who had enlisted because they liked army work and wanted to be identified with units rich in military tradition. Those who later joined the Division Artillery lived up to the high standards set by the parent unit in previous wars. In addition, this history may well prove useful in the education of artillerymen in the future. Because the fundamentals of artillery have not changed, their application in amphibious and jungle warfare, as described in this book, should be of value to the artillery student. " Major General Harold R. Barker had a distinguished thirty-three year military career that spanned service under the famed General John Pershing in the battle with Mexican Revolutionary leader Poncho Villa, and through both World Wars. A native Rhode Islander who settled in Pascoag during his retirement years, he was a highly decorated U.S. Army Officer who was considered one of the world's finest artillery experts. He was honored with the Rhode Island Cross, and worked as a very successful manufacturing executive and banker. Public Edition--Presumed also first edition.

Quarto in eights (21.1 by 15.4 cm), in an eighteenth-century blue calf binding, the smooth spine ruled and lette…red in gilt, gilt frames to the covers, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Retaining both the general and New Testament title-pages, each a letterpress title within a cordiform panel surrounded by woodcut portraits of the Apostles and symbols of the Old Testament prophets, the main text in black letter and printed in two columns with woodcut initials. Bound with John Speedâs Genealogies at the front and the Two Right Profitable and Fruitfull Concordances (Bonham Norton and John Bill, 1619) at the rear. Bound without quire G, supplied with nine leaves from a contemporary Geneva Bible with all text retained, the contents browned, closely trimmed at the top edge, the title-pages with expert restorations, and bearing various ownership inscriptions and a few marginal annotations. Herbert 365. A handsome early example of the King James Bible in a fine Georgian binding. The King James Bible, or Authorized Version, first published in 1611, is the most celebrated and influential English translation ever made, the work of some fifty scholars appointed by King James I and a monument of English prose whose cadences shaped the language for four centuries. Early quarto editions such as this were printed for household and church use in the years immediately following the first folio, and were often issued together with John Speed?s genealogical tables of scripture and with concordances, as here. The main text is set in the traditional black letter, and the striking heart-shaped, or cordiform, title panels surrounded by the Apostles and the prophets are characteristic of the Bibles produced by the King?s Printers in this period.
