Image 200 x 305 mm, sheet 230 x 330 mm. Uneven overall toning with heavier toning to the right hand margin, chips to the upper left and upper right corners, light creasing and marginal loss and wear, the edges uneven with old handling wear, and a few small marginal tears. An unsophisticated but honest copy that hasn't been backed or mounted. Good. A scarce early lithographic view of Adelaide, drawn by John Baptist Austin in November 1849, depicting the young colonial city from the west end of Hindley Street. The view captures the settlement during its formative years, with drays, livestock, simple timber and stone buildings, churches and commercial premises illustrating the rapid development of the new colony. Austin's composition is recognised as the first lithographed view of Adelaide and was reproduced in the Illustrated London News in August 1850, helping to introduce the growing settlement to a British audience. The present example is the tinted lithographic and perhaps cheaper issue. There is a hand coloured and plate signed issue that has been placed in institutions. Although showing faults, it remains an elusive survival of the first lithograph printed of colonial Adelaide.…

Almost certainly a unique document of considerable depth in terms of content, and of substantial physical size - being of large folio size. The Concept of Freedom; An Interpretation of the Fall in terms of Self-Consciousness. A Thesis presented for the degree of Doctor of Divinity by Philip Austin Louis Meldrum of St. John's College, Durham, to The University, Durham, In the Year of Grace One Thousand Nineteen Hundred and Sixty. Overall in good condition, although the binding has considerable wear. The outer cover has leather spine and corners with marbled paper over boards. A large part of the leather spine is missing, and outer joints are weak - particularly the front cover which is almost detached. Covers are bumped, rubbed and with losses to covering. The contents are in fact very good - the text is bright and clean throughout. The text contains numerous hand-drawn diagrams, as well as tipped in images. Included is a separate folded large chart about Philosophy. An impressive work from a dedicated theology scholar. There is a presentation inscription at the front which indicates this book was presented as a gift to John David Philip Meldrum in 1978, from his father (the author) and mother. 519pp. Text in English. Condition: Very good condition, in good used frame This print is a good example or early colour lithograph printing and a lovely image of Northampton in the mid 19th century. It was published in 1855 by John Sunman Austin, Architect, of Bedford. The print is titled "Market Square, Northampton", and dedicated by Austin to "the Mayor Aldermen and Town Council of & its Vicinity". The frame is a rather nice late 19th/early 20th century solid oak frame with a gilt slip. …

First Edition. First edition. One of a stated 96 copies of this fragile, privately printed production. The first appearance of Jeffers' poem, "An Artist," preceding its appearance in a revised version in CAWDOR the same year. Also includes "Robinson Jeffers: The Man" by Benjamin DeCasseres; brief letter from Havelock Ellis; brief note by Jeffers; facsimile portion of the original manuscript; and bibliography compiled by R. H. Griffith. Small 4to (approximately 7.5 x 10.75") stapled paperwraps printed on "Buckeye" watermark paper; heavier Buckeye paper covers with label tipped to front; and tipped-in frontispiece on coated paper (reproduction of an inscribed copy of a photo of Jeffers by Johan Hagemeyer), as called for [Broomfield A8]. Alberts reported 200 copies printed but colophon states, ".strictly limited to an edition of ninety-six copies." Mayfield himself confirmed there were only 96 copies in total to George M. "Marty" Barringer, a family friend and collector (then of Georgetown University Lauinger Library Special Collections). But Blanck/Johnson's AMERICAN FIRST EDITIONS (4th edition, p.291) states "the publisher informs that [the colophon] is in error, that it should have read 196" and that the "bulk of the edition is said to be either wholly destroyed or damaged by fire" - perhaps explaining the seeming dearth of copies extant, regardless of the actual number first printed. Slight tanning to covers, small chip to upper edge front cover, small tear backed with archival tape to rear cover, and neatly repaired tear to cover label; still quite attractive and otherwise nearly fine.
