Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A Southern Methodist minister, Oscar Penn Fitzgerald (1829-1911) of North Carolina was sent to California as a missionary by his denomination in 1855. He remained for more than twenty years, winning appointment as state superintendent of public education in 1867 despite his pro-Southern position during the Civil War. In the late 1870s, Fitzgerald returned to the East, editing the Nashville Christian Advocate, 1878-1890, and accepting appointment as a Southern Methodist bishop. California sketches (1880) is the first of his books dealing with his stay in California, providing brief anecdotes of his life in California in the mid-1850s: pastorate of churches in the gold-mining town of Sonora, 1855-1856, and in Santa Rosa and Santa Clara; editing the Pacific Methodist Advocate in San Francisco; and conflict between Northern and Southern Methodist churches in California. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The Town of Litchfield was first settled by emigrants from Hartford, Windsor, Wethersfield, Farmington and Lebanon, in 1720-1721. In 1751, the County of Litchfield was incorporated and organized, and at the same time Litchfield was established as the county-seat. The township is located near the center of the county, which occupies the north-west corner of the State of Connecticut. It is diversified by hills, valleys, mountains, lakes, forests and cultivated fields. The author traces the history of his 'little settlement in the wilderness' during a one hundred and forty year period, roughly the early 1700s to 1859, and frankly points out that, 'The early history of Litchfield is one of peril and privation-of patient industry, and slow development,' as opposed to the 'sudden and gigantic' growth reported in many communities. The book contains 10 chapters, and an Appendix, all filled with lists, rosters, significant documents, memoranda, petitions, and historical events. These chapters include: Events in Connecticut preceding the Litchfield settlement, incidents of the first settlement, alarms and measurers of defense, miscellaneous events, events preceding the Revolution, the Revolutionary Era, men of the revolution, progress and improvement, and ecclesiastical matters. The Appendix lists colonial and state officers, justices and judges, commissioners, clerks, Senators, members of Congress, various local officers, and numerous biographies and biographical sketches. Paperback, (1859), repr. 2007, 2011, Illus., Appendix, 279 pp. …

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Grayson County, Virginia, was formed in 1792 from portions of Patrick and Wythe Counties, and is located near the convergence of the North Carolina and Tennessee borders. The county is bounded by New River and Wythe County on the North, and by the Blue Ridge and state of North Carolina on the South, and was first known as Botetourt District, and afterwards, as Washington and Montgomery Districts. This work provides a basic foundation and a fundamental source for beginning your genealogical research into pioneers of Grayson County, Virginia. Unlike many of the early 20th Century historical and genealogical authors, Mr. Nuckolls focuses almost exclusively on the Pioneer Families, including the progenitors, progenies, and families allied by marriage, following many of them through several generations. This work includes references to approximately 4,000 individuals. The principal families addressed in this volume include: Anderson, Asbury, Blair, Bourne, Bryan, Canute, Carico, Coltrane, Cooley, Cornett, Cox, Davis, Dickey, Dickinson, Dow, Early, Felts, Fulton, Garland, Garrison, Goodykoontz, Gwyn, Hale, Hanks, Hash, Isom, Johnston, Jones, Kenny, Kyle, La Rowe, Lenoir, Lundy, McCamant, McMillan, Moore, Nuckolls, Oglesby, Osborne, Pendleton, Perkins, Phipps, Phlegar, Piper, Pugh, Reeves, Scott, Sheffy, Smith, Swift, Thomas, Vaughn, Ward, Waugh, Worrell, Young. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The history of the German auxiliaries, who fought for Great Britain in the Revolutionary War, has not received from American writers the amount of attention which its importance would seem to deserve. Much has been made of the fact that 7,000 French soldiers and 19,000 French seamen assisted the United States in the siege of Yorktown, but we have forgotten that a force of between 15,000 and 20,000 Germans served for seven years against us; that more than 29,000 were brought to America for this purpose; that more than 12,000 never returned to Germany. The author, in preparing this work, consulted the voluminous records contained in the libraries and archives of Germany, and found original German accounts of every important engagement, and of almost every skirmish of the Revolutionary War, from the year 1776 to the conclusion of the War, except of some of those battles which occurred in the Carolinas and Georgia, and in which few, if any, Germans were engaged. The book begins with the political situation in Hesse-Cassel, the formation of military units, and continues to America and the end of the Revolution. The reader will find many personal and biographical passages, as well as stories and adventures of comparatively unimportant persons through the author's attempt to give an idea of what sort of people the auxiliaries were, and of what impression America and the Americans made upon them. This is a fascinating depiction of the American Revolution from the German point of view. Softcover, (1884), repr. 2011, Maps, Plans, Appendix, Index, 354 pp.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - In 1917, The Colonial Dames of the State of New York, published this volume, which was the result of an effort that had been underway for over four years. This work represents ninety genealogical records found in old family Bibles of Dutch and English New York families, Bibles, which, at the time of publication, were fast disappearing and with them were lost the missing links sought by genealogists and family historians. With more than 3,000 names in the index, there is a treasure of genealogical information, most of which is listed in chronological order, and includes marriages, births and deaths. There are also numerous narratives and addenda provided on the lives, deaths, etc., of many of the family members. Paperback, (1917), repr. 2011, Illus., Index, 389 pp.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This book is organized into two parts: 'Early Settlers of Alabama, Part I,' by Col. James Edmonds Saunders; and 'Notes and Genealogies, Part II,' by his granddaughter, Elizabeth Saunders Blair Stubbs. Part I began as a series of newspaper articles, first published by Col. Saunders, in the 'Moulton Advertiser,' in April 1880, relating to the 'Early Settlers of Lawrence County [Alabama] and the Tennessee Valley.' These articles, which increased in scope and material year after year, soon encompassed neighboring counties, the State, and adjoining States, ran in the 'Advertiser' until 1889, and were subsequently published in book form. The author's recollections, as well as records, interviews and correspondence formed the basis for this work, and provide the reader with rare information and insights into the life and times of the early pioneers. In 1899, Elizabeth Saunders Blair Stubbs, the granddaughter of Col. Saunders, began what she described as a 'supplementary' to the Colonel's 'Early Settlers,' while the author was alive and able to approve and provide counsel relative to her contributions. Mrs. Stubbs compiled an enormous amount of information from original records and secondary sources, and consulted numerous authorities (which are listed in the 'Introduction') in the preparation of this work. The genealogies, as a rule, begin with the immigrant ancestor, followed by their descendants down to the mid-nineteenth century, and are often supplemented with biographical information. The principal families addressed in this work include: Baldwin, Bankhead, Banks, Bibb, Billups, Blair, Cantzon, Clark, Clay, Coleman, Cox, Donohoe, Dubose, Dudley, Dunn, Elliott, Flint, Fountaine, Foster, Fry, Gholson, Goode, Gray, Harris, Hill, Hopkins, Hubbard, Kennedy, Lanier, Ligon, Lowe, McCarthy, McGehee, Maclin, McMillan, Manning, Maury, Moore, Mumford, Oliver, Ormond, Poellnitz, Ray, Richardson, Saunders, Shelton, Sherrod, Shorter, Speed, Swoope, Tait, Taliaferro, Thompson, Tillman, Urquhart, Walthall, Watkins, Webb, Weeden, Wells, White, Withers, Wyatt, Yates, and Young.
