With the original blue paper wrappers of the 19 part issues bound at the rear, the front wrapper of part 1 and the rear wrapper of part 16 torn with loss and repaired, LACKING the wrappers for part 17. Later blue morocco gilt, spine with five raised and gilt panels, top edge gilt, uncut, a LARGE PAPER COPY, one text leaf and 2 plates with the top corners creased, 2 plates with repaired fore-edge tears without loss or affecting the images, slip-case in marbled paper over card, the edges of the opening in matching blue morocco, overall a lovely copy from the library of the Darwin scholar, RICHARD FREEMAN, with a brief note from him loosely inserted at the front. *The first 17 parts were issued over the period 1815-1820. Bernard Quaritch bought up the remaining unsold parts and published a further double-issue in 1875. In the copy offered, the later part is intercalated with the earlier ones. According to CHIEVELY Vol.7, p.361, Journal of the Society for Bibliography of Natural History, only 30 copies of the Large Paper copy were issued, and only 250 of the Small Paper version. He is apparently the founder of the family fortune, deciding not to enter the ministry and instead the business of trade, accumulating wealth. He married Mary Emerson (March 7, 1665 - October 13, 1703), daughter of Rev. John Emerson of Gloucester and Ruth Symonds and granddaughter of Deputy Governor Samuel Symonds of Ipswich, on May 26, 1687. They had seven children together including Rev. Samuel Phillips (1690 - 1771) of Andover. After her death in 1703, he married Sarah (Pickman) Mayfield on April 27, 1704 and had one more child with her.
