Leather-bound. Zustand: Disbound. EARLY EDITION. Front board (leather - tree calf) detached and present. Back board missing, large horizonal tear across the top of title page, losing the letters ".ISH ANTIQUITIES," Spine worn and edges and corners bumped. Front hinge started. No charts present. The historical, religious and social subject matter addressed by Rev. Jennings is fascinating in its own right, but FAR MORE FASCINATING are the many instances of marginal annotation done by a close, obviously very knowledgeable and scholarly, early nineteenth-century reader -- through Chapter XI. The annotations are in Hebrew, Classical Greek, and English. Some of the marginalia is indicated with a tiny plus (+) sign, and some with a minus (-) sign; words are underlined, and one small marginal notation is a very finely drawn hand, pointing to the text of note.…

Second English edition, published the same year as the first, of this analysis of the true economic cost of slavery. Although the son of a slave trader, Adam Hodgson (1788-1862), a Liverpudlian merchant, wrote and campaigned extensively on the abolition of the slave trade: he equally corresponded with such figures as Robert Southey and James Cropper. In the Letter, Hodgson responds to Say's Treatise of Political Economy, which was first published in English in 1821. There, Say had emphasised the lower economic cost for producers, using slave labour. Hodgson sought to demonstrate, by quoting extensively from Adam Smith, that free labour was a more economically efficient model. The strength of his attack prompted a response from Say, who "claimed to have retreated from his earlier position, stating his faith in the progressive force and ultimate triumph of antislavery" (Glickstein, p. 305). Not in Hogg. Jonathan A. Glickstein, American Exceptionalism, American Anxiety: Wages, Competition, and Degraded Labour in the Antebellum United States, 2002. Octavo (213 x 134 mm). Stab sewn and cased in modern grey boards, spine lettered in black. Minor foxing to title page, final leaf dust soiled; a very good copy.…
