Growing up in rural Mississippi, he learned the value of family, of God, of community, a sense of humor and a good hook shot. Heading into college at Mississippi State University, Bobby Shows hoped to live up to his status as the number one major college recruit in the Magnolia State. However, before he could do that, he had to get right with God. In the end, he and his teammates won more than championships. Events in which they participated sparked change in the segregationist landscape of college sports and college campuses. Bobby Shows' early years in rural Mississippi during the 1940s and 1950s are almost storybook quality. Segregation was more than black and white; it was saved and lost. Mississippi buckles the Bible Belt synched down tight. Though humble, Shows enjoyed a happy childhood, raised by two strong parents and surrounded by family, friends, and a faith community. Level fields of play were hard to find in Bobby's day. Whether playing basketball on a hard-scrabble court where you hoped to get the down-hill end for the second half of play, or working in the cotton fields alongside other boys like him, old black men and women and young ones, too. It didn't matter - under the scorching sun, the back-aching, finger-splitting work of picking cotton takes place on level fields. Any illusion of integration and equality did not extend beyond the cotton fields Bobby worked as a boy. Separate but equal may have been the slogan of segregation, but separation of the races remained the singular emphasis in the South. Equality was at best a secondary consideration. Bobby's story starts in the middle of segregation - an oppressive 'us against them' culture about to be turned on its head. His experiences while at Mississippi State both on and off the basketball court integrated a love and concern for people that would lead him into a life of ministry. As an individual, Bobby remains true to self and to God, and his story is about how that combination of self-awareness and devotion to God has led to a productive and meaningful life.…

Original Limp Leather Boards. Zustand: Very Good. Early Edition. No stated date c1897. 320pp. and 7 black and white plates by Ray Potter. All edges gilt. We believe that there should be a black and white frontispiece but this is missing. Unfortunaterly we have little information about the author of this novel, but COPAC has 'Lady Croome's Secret' as being published by Addison of London in 1897. This may be a pirated edition, published in Preston. The author's name on the front board and spine is spelt 'Zimmermann', but the last 'n' of the name is missing on the title page. The book is bound in the original limp red leather boards with gold titling (Righted at Last) and the the author's name stamped in gold on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very ghood condition with some scuffing to the leather on the boards. The spine ends are lightly bumped with some loss of colour on the spine corners. The front board is slightly curled. The contents are tight and clean although, as mentioned above, the frontispiece is not present. There is no inscription. Ray Potter (illustrator).…

A late nineteenth century edition of Scottish writer and editor John Gibson Lockhart's insightful study of the life of France's Napoleon Bonaparte, in a limp morocco binding. Illustrated with a frontispiece, this smart volume charts the chronological course of Napoleon's life in eighteen chapters, revised and abridged from Lockhart's larger work, usually composed of forty-two chapters.This is a very scarce edition, published by James Askew of Preston, a small publisher, who specialised in volumes for schools and colleges. Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. A scarce early C19th reprint edition combining 'The White Company' with 'Rodney Stone' (features two b&w illustrations) and 'Brigadier Gerard'. The A.C. Doyle Encyclopedia states that this volume was published by James Askew sometime between 1903-1920. An attractive edition with gilt-stamped pictorial blue cloth boards - these remain in pleasing condition with just a small bruise to lower front tip, the spine slightly dulled and with a nick to the crown. The binding is tight and there are no inscriptions or labels. The text block is heavily browned to edges, somewhat less so to the text itself.
