Hinges a bit tender and with binding slightly gapping in places, but still holding strongly. ; The booklet was circulated by the Merchantile Association Plymouth Incorporated. A brief travel guide with many illustrations from photographs. The population was 99 K around the time of publication. ; B&W Photographs; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 70 pages.

A handsome set of three volumes bound in matching dark Green cloth bindings, the first 2 vols. with a gilt ichneumon motif on the front cover. Lower hinge of Vol. 1 cracked inside but holding well ; some light foxing / spotting to endpapers of all 3 vols., but contents otherwise very clean and bright. Vols. 1 to 3 only (out of 5). N.B. : This is a heavy set and may attract extra postal charges.

12mo, pp. vi, [vi], 311; a very good copy in contemporary sheep, spine gilt, red morocco label (spine rubbed, scratches on back cover, tiny chip in the label). First edition: the major lifetime collection of the author's poetry. A similar collection had been published in 1729, as Tales, Epistles, Odes, Fables, &c.; this new volume has significant additions, including a number of poems written in the intervening years. The poetry is arranged in four parts, the first containing two verse essays and three tales, and the second a selection of epistles, odes, fables, satires, love elegies, and prologues and epilogues; a third part is devoted entirely to 'The Battel of the Poets', and the fourth consists of translations from Latin and Greek, including seven poems by Catullus. The essay on improving the English language consists of very specific and relatively modest suggestions on such topics as forming the past tense of verbs and the plurals of nouns, and the use of relative pronouns.
