Uncommon. (Folio, 142*221 mm). THOMAS, cleric and historian, was a hard-working parish priest, a conscientious archdeacon, a zealous defender of his Church, and the author of four religious books. S. Asaph is the only one of the Welsh dioceses which has had its history investigated in such detail; and the debt which later research workers owe to the archdeacon for this splendid work is incalculable. This copy has an inscription on the title page: "Hare Hongi from J.L.B." Henry Matthew Stowell (1859-1944), also known by the pen-name Hare Hongi, was a New Zealand language interpreter and genealogist of European and M?ori descent.

Contents includes tables of temperature, wind force and direction, earthquakes, atmospheric pressure and elastic force of vapour, rainfall, diagrams, descriptions of weather by weather station. James Hector was Director of the Golonial Museum and Geological Survey Department of the New Zealand Government. "As the earlier meteorological reports are now out of print, it may be useful to recapitulate the history of the deparment, and to describe the position and outfit of the various observing stations, especially as the very ample provision that was made by the New Zealand Government for procuring accurate meteorological statistics in former years has been lately very much curtailed in favour of current weather reports." - from the 1885 report, page vii.

Large octavo, xviii, 175 pages plus 64 lithographs from drawings by the author (depicting 87 different species and varieties of grasses). Contemporary half calf and marbled papered boards with a contrasting leather title-label on the spine; covers a little rubbed at the extremities, with the paper sides a little scuffed; edges and early leaves a little foxed, with scattered light foxing elsewhere; small blank piece missing from the top corner of plate XLIII (with the corner later replaced with paper); minor signs of age and use (including three tiny chips to the leading edge of the last two plates); a very good copy. 'To insure accuracy of form, the specimens of the various grasses were lightly inked, and faintly impressed on the prepared surface of the lithographic stone, but the details were filled in by hand, together with enlarged drawings showing the anatomical characters of the inflorescence in each species from original microscopic disections [sic] made by Mr. Buchanan' (preface). Provenance: Sir [John] Benjamin Stone (1838-1914, British photographer, politician and traveller), with his bookplate and private library label ('The Grange, Erdington') on the front pastedown.
