The second in brown blind-stamped cloth, gilt decorations on spine and upper cover; sometime a little shaken, covers slightly marked, corners a little bumped, ownership crest stamped or stencilled on front pastedown ("VIRTUTE ET FIDE", name below neatly deleted). Knockabout "education" manuals with numerous jolly engravings, and sections on, e.g., "The Illustrated English Grammar; or, Lindley Murray Simplified", "The Comic Speaker; or, Rhetoric and Education for the Million", "Illustrated Arithmetic; or, Cyphering Made Comical", "Music for the Million; or, Singing Made Easy" (by Dick Crotchet), "Drawing for the Million" ("All pictures, whether of the fine arts, or of mankind, have strong or weak points. Every individual is also sure to possess them, which it should be the great aim of the young artist to discover"), "The Comic History of England", "The Comic Geography; or World 'Turned Inside Out'" and, inevitably, "The Comic Etiquette, or Manners for the Million" (by "A Nice Young Man"). "[W]e would, in this publication," declares the anonymous first-volume preface, "play something of the 'National Fool,' and talk nonsense - but with a meaning; for it is an unquestionable truth, that wisdom may be learned as well from the 'fool's cap' as from the professor's chair." The whole enterprise, indeed, is discreetly anonymous (undated, too), though there are suggestions it may be the initiative of the artist Henry George Hine (1811-1895), an early contributor to Punch, who certainly signs some of the illustrations. There are inklings of How to be Topp, that masterpiece of a century later (Geoffrey Willans and Ronald Searle also graduating from Punch), and "The Comic History of England" must surely have been an inspiration for W.C. Sellar and R.J. Yeatman (two more Punch contributors), whose 1066 and All That was published in 1930. "The Romans held possession of Britain till they could hold it no longer, and then gave it up like true radicals . . ." "Edward III. beat the Scotch so thoroughly, that it was positively asserted that there was not a single man in the whole of that country without a black eye, a bloody nose, or a broken limb. From him is said to have arisen the jelly of Scotch marmalade, which is made in remembrance of the manner in which the Scotch were beaten - i.e. to a jelly . . ." "The Stuarts were a lucky race, They were called Stewarts, I suppose, from their being always in a stew, or hot water, which is the same thing . . ." Both volumes seem extraordinarily scarce.…
