In den WarenkorbA handsomely bound mixed set, comprising the first edition of volumes I & II, the second of volumes III and V, and the fourth of volume IV. This set was gathered by the dilettante Richard Gregory (1761-1839), who studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, during Watson's period as Regius Professor of Divinity. Despite his later theological fervour, Watson (1737-1816) began his academic career as a professor of chemistry at Cambridge. On receiving the chair, he cheerfully acknowledged that "I knew nothing at all of Chemistry, had never read a syllable on the subject; nor seen a single experiment in it" (quoted in Hole), and his house later suffered the consequences when an experiment blew up in his face. The Essays reflect Watson's applied interest in chemistry: his attention is particularly taken by opportunities to apply chemical insights to the development of British industry. Gregory's contemporary engraved bookplate is on the front pastedown of each volume, while a number of contemporary ink annotations - presumably in his hand - cross-reference Watson's arguments with other contemporary writers. ESTC T78143, T150872, N55005, T204066. 5 vols, octavo (152 x 93 mm). Wood-engraved tables in the text. Near-contemporary mottled calf, spines ruled and decorated in gilt and with twin black calf labels, edges yellow. Light wear, minor foxing and finger soiling to contents: a very good set.

In den WarenkorbOktav. VI, (10), 782, (36) S. Späterer Halbleinenband The case law begins with the Vernon against Vernon case of 21 November 1737 and concludes with the Turner against Turner case of 1783. A second edition was published in 1828, edited by J. E. Blunt. These Reports, as originally published by the author, were not what the profession had a right to except from a lawyer of Mr. Ambler`s experience and abilities. In the preface to his Reports he says: " This work, I am aware, derives its only pretensions to merit, from being an accurate relation of facts, and opinions of great me presiding in courts of justice". The accuracy on which the reporter prides himself, has not been granted to him by the profession, which affords but another example of the inability of authors always to judge of their own productions. "His Reports are well known to be an extremely careless and imperfect production. The facts of most of the cases are stated shortly and defectively; in many, the dicta of the judges, in some, even the points themselves have been erroneously reported. The only notice which some of the most important cases in the book have received, is a short momorandum of the point determinde. The notes taken in the earlier part of his life, evidently bear few marks of subsequent revision; and the frequent discovery of errors has given a reputation for inaccuracy to the publication". (58).
