Ancient Blue Paper Apparently Over Earlier Full Calf, Later Paper Spine, Paper Label With Handwritten Author And Title, And London 1805 Handwritten Below On Spine. A Few Short Pencil Notes On Endpapers, No Other Names Or Marks. Quite Worn, Frayed And Chipped At Corners. Pages With Light Foxing In Text Block, A Few Tiny Spots, Otherwise Clean And Crisp, Edges Of Page Block Retain Original Polish. Per Wikipedia, Richard Payne Knight ( 1751 - 1824) Of Downton Castle In Herefordshire, And Of 5 Soho Square, London, England, Was A Classical Scholar, Connoisseur, Archaeologist And Numismatist Best Known For His Theories Of Picturesque Beauty And For His Interest In Ancient Phallic Imagery. He Served As A Member Of Parliament For Leominster (1780-84) And For Ludlow (1784-1806). An Analytical Inquiry Into The Principles Of Taste, 1805, Was Knight's Most Influential Work In His Lifetime. This Book Sought To Explain The Experience Of 'Taste' Within The Mind And To Clarify The Theorization Of The Concept Of The Picturesque, Following From The Writings Of William Gilpin And Uvedale Price On The Subject. Knight's Views On The Aesthetics Of The Picturesque Are Also Formed In Engagement With Edmund Burke's Emphasis On The Importance Of Sensation, Which Knight Partly Rejects In Favor Of A Modified Associationism. The Philosophical Basis Of Knight's Theories Have Implications For His Account Of The Relationship Between The 'Beautiful' And The 'Picturesque'. For Knight, Aesthetic Concepts Cannot Be Formed Directly From Optical Sensations, Because These Must Be Interpreted Within The Mind Before They Can Be Recognized As Beautiful. Thus A Classical Architecture Roman Temple Is Beautiful Because Of The Proportions Of Its Parts, But These Proportions Can Never Be Perceived Directly By The Senses, Which Will Simply Encounter A Mass Of Confused Impressions. 'Beauty' Is Thus A Product Of Internal Mental Acts. It Is Therefore Proper To Speak Of Moral, Mathematical And Other Non-Sensuous Forms Of Beauty, Contrary To Burke, Hogarth And Others Who Claimed Such Usages Were Metaphorical. In All Cases 'The Particular Object [E.G. Proportion] Is An Abstract Idea.'.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Hudibras was originally published between 1663 and 1678, and is Butler's classic satirical poem, which has remained admired and influential for over three centuries. This 18th Century copy is very smart indeed. Hudibras is a satirical poem by Samuel Butler, first published in parts between 1663 and 1678, that lampoons religious zealotry, political hypocrisy, and Puritanism in the aftermath of the English Civil War. Written in rhyming couplets and rich with classical allusions, the poem follows the misadventures of the self-important knight Sir Hudibras and his squire Ralpho. Celebrated for its wit, linguistic inventiveness, and sharp commentary, Hudibras was widely read throughout the 17th and 18th centuries and influenced later satirists, including Jonathan Swift and Alexander Pope. Hudibras in Three Parts. Written in the Time of the Late Wars. Corrected and Amended: With Additions. To Which are Added, Annotations, And an exact INDEX to the Whole. Adorned with CUTTS, designed and engraved by Mr. Hogarth. By Samuel Butler (All 3 Parts are in this one volume, along with an introduction and section on the author's life). Printed for C. Bathurst, E.Johnson, T. Davies, W. Strahan, C. Corbett, B. White, T. Longman, R. Horsefield, T. Becket, J. Nicol, T. Caslon, E. and J. Dilly, Hawes, Clarke, and Collins, T. Cadell, J. Lowndes, B. Tovey, H. Gardner, and Ed. Johnston, London, 1775. A near fine example, rebound with a 20th Century binding - tan leather spine with raised bands, blind embossed tooled decals, and tan morocco title label with gilt. Boards covered with brown cloth. A very smart copy - light wear, crisp edges and soundly bound. Text is bright and clean throughout, with light scattered age spotting in places. This copy is particularly noted for its Hogarth illustrations - comprising 16 Plates, including 5 foldouts. There is also a portrait frontispiece of Butler by J Van der Gucht. Language: English. Exterior is untreated and unclean with leather cracking at hinges, first volume has what appears to be ink or paint on the front board. This is a rare first edition and was published simultaneously in the same year in London with the Dublin printing being the most scarce. Later volumes of this title were issued in 1784 and also 1786. The interior bindings of both volumes are good though there are some issues. Volume 1 (616 pp.) is missing the front and rear free end page and has a library bookplate on the pastedown which reads 'Ex Bibliotheca Congregationis SS. Redemptoris Neo-Aureliae" and the title page of each volume is stamped stating these books were assigned to the Redemptorist Library, St. Alphonsus Church of New Orleans. Volume 2 (606 pp.) has the top inch of the title page cut off as well the last inch and 1/2 of the rear free end page. In both cases these were cut to remove a signature. Only other markings found in book is on the first page of volume 2 where there is some remnants of handwriting. Volume 2 also has a small stain in the bottom outside corner and may possibly be missing one of the front three end pages. Pages are quite tone due to age and spotting and foxing is present throughout. Volume 2 exterior also has a vertical crack near the center of the spine leather. Note: these are considered ex-library even though they originally belonged to and are marked as being from a church.
